This is still going to likely be a no from the Senators.

The 1st is going nowhere; they've learned their lesson and it's just not going to be moved. Duclair is also someone that management seems to really like, and he shined in his time with the Sens.

The real crux of this though is Brady. Here's the thing about him... he means more to the Sens organization than his on ice play (which is top tier), and he means more than his off ice contributions (he's likely the next captain). Brady is the face for the entire rebuild and nothing will change that, even if it's Johnny freaking Gaudreau. The optics behind that trade after everything the Sens have hyped Brady up to be would be awful; when they're selling fans on the future led by Brady, it's a bad idea to trade Brady. Especially if it'll also cost them that 1st.

So I can't believe I'm somehow justifying turning down Gaudreau, but I think the Sens don't even consider that.

Senators say no. They’re in rebuild mode not win now mode, and Tkachuk is 6 years younger than Gaudreau.

Gaudreau is a phenomenal player, but Brady is special In Ottawa. He's the heartbeat of the team, and he's probably going to be the Captain eventually.

Also there is a strong chance Ottawa will be even worse than this year, so there's a good chance that pick could end up being Lafreniere. Sens dodged a huge bullet with the lottery this year, it could be a decade before we trade away our 1st again.

Gaudreau is only 25. With 84pts last year and 99pts this year and realistically I can see him scoring 50 goals.

Is Brady capable of a 100pt season? Or 50g?

But I agree that Ottawa declines. Just pointing out the other side of the argument.
