Yzerman quickly makes his mark on the Wings

Created by: MCfubar
Team: 2019-20 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 19, 2019
Published: Apr. 19, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
As we've seen from him in the beginning with Tampa Bay, he's not afraid to make some bold moves to get the Wings back into the playoffs.

Draft Day, Yzerman sees Hughes, Kakko, Turcotte, Cozens and Byram taken before the Wings at 6, so he makes a move to trade down three spots with Anaheim, picking up the 9th overall and St Louis's 1st round pick via Buffalo. At number 9, the Wings select Philip Broberg (LD), a big mobile Swedish defender.

Later in the 1st round, Yzerman flips the newly acquired pick to the Winnepeg Jets for the rights to RFA Jacob Trouba and quickly signs the young right-shot defenseman as one of the cornerstones of the franchise.

As the offseason continues, more moves are made to quickly change the makeup of this franchise.

Unfortunately for Green and the Wings, his medical condition continues into the new season, so he's placed on IR freeing up the spot for Sulak.

Ducks decline. Hughes and Kakko are going 1 and 2, after that, 3-10 all have similar upside. If there was a clear cut 3rd OA guy, maybe, but mock drafts have the same 7-8 guys flipping all over the place.

Podkkolzin (most have him rated at #3) is considered above the others in talent, IQ, inner drive, etc. The only issue most teams see is he's under contract with St Petersberg for two years. The Ducks are looking at the future, and he's just too good to pass up by trading up to 6.

Byram over Broberg

Byram is already gone in the top five, so dropping down to take Broberg makes more sense.

True but you never know what can happen in a draft. Even in a very deep draft, a lot of consensus top prospects has fallen the draft board. (2018: Filip Zadina, Noah Dobson, Joseph Veleno, Bode Wilde, Jett Woo, Serron Noel).

There's a pretty significant chance that Podkolzin is going to drop due to his contract. I've seen a few mock drafts in the past week or so that have him at 6-7ish. If the Ducks are "looking at the future", picking anyone of the guys that are 4-10, the Turcotte, Byram, Dach, Zegras or Broberg's of the world, and then another player at 26 makes a heck of a lot more sense than moving up to get a guy that there's a tonne of question marks around.

The reason why you want to move down is because you know this. They're not giving up 2 1st round picks to move up to take a big swing on a guy that isn't going to being playing in SoCal for at least a couple of years. Bob Murray has a pretty solid track record of picking in the late first/second/third rounds. No reason to think he'd do this.
