Yzerman improves the defense and accelerates the rebuild

Created by: MCfubar
Team: 2019-20 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 21, 2019
Published: Apr. 21, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Reports are out from Winnepeg that Trouba may have played his last game for the Jets. After two contentious contract negotiations, the Jets opt to trade him before the season begins.

Then makes his second draft day deal with his old team to bring in a franchise cornerstone at the cost of a core player and taking on additional salary.

Unfortunately for Green, his medical condition continues into the new season, so he lands himself on IR.

Trades
1.
DET
  1. Trouba, Jacob [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
Trouba signs long-term with the Wings to pair with DeKeyser
WPG
  1. Cholowski, Dennis
  2. 2019 2nd round pick (NYI)
  3. 2020 2nd round pick (WSH)
Additional Details:
Winnepeg gets a promising young, cost-controlled defenseman that is NHL ready in exchange for someone who has no desire to continue to play for the Jets.
2.
DET
  1. Callahan, Ryan
  2. Point, Brayden [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
Yzerman's other draft day deal. TB is in a cap crunch, and they need to rid salary to continue their quest for the cup, so the only way to rid themselves of Callahan is to also include the rights to Point (which may be hard to fit under the cap).
TBL
  1. Athanasiou, Andreas
  2. 2019 2nd round pick (SJS)
  3. 2020 2nd round pick (DET)
Additional Details:
It will take trades for multiple key players to free up cap in order to sign Point, so they opt to trade for a promising proven forward and two 2nd round picks.
3.
DET
  1. 2020 4th round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
Yzerman's first real off-season deal to shed some salary, but more so to free up a roster spot for one of the young kids.
EDM
  1. Helm, Darren ($1,850,000 retained)
  2. 2020 5th round pick (DET)

EDM is already strapped for cash, wouldnt make sense for them to take on more. We could take on Cally's deal but Point is an extreme over payment especially with only 1 year left. I think a pick and a prospect to the wings would be fair. Taylor Raddysh has always had my attention. The Trouba deal.. Again, an over payment to a team that is in a pickle. If WPG is looking to get rid of Trouba I think the 2 draft picks you listed would be enough. However, as a rebuilder I'm not excited about giving away draft picks.

Somewhat right about EDM but we do have a bit of room, but likely not for Helm maybe if it was Glendening I could see it work cause Oilers need a good faceoff guy

As a wings fan I dont think Helm or Glen's deal is really that bad. If I'm trying to move someone it's Abby first.

Overpayment by Tampa, why when you're returning a young and proven center/wing in AA along with the two draft picks. The Wings get a young cornerstone center to have two of the top young centers in the league, as well as potentially having your top two lines with players all under 25.

For Trouba, giving up a young second pair defenseman and two seconds for a young top-pair defenseman to ensure he comes "home" rather than taking a chance for him to go somewhere else is decent for both teams. It also gives WPG much needed cap space to sign Laine, Conner, and possibly keep Hayes from going somewhere else.

I was just stating Glendening is only bottom 6 guy on DET that Oilers should take if option was there

yes yes, get trouba now dont let anything get in the way its more than worth it. Im on the fence with point but he looks great bt he playes on the best offence in hockey. still this team lacks elite talent and point could be that. so sure id do that trade and sign him but it will cost more than 6.5 a season.

I agree to much to give up for Trouba. Trust me the asking price will come down. NO WAY TB trades point. If we move Helm it would be 1 for 1 or a pick Detroit isn’t giving up a pick as well.

A rebuild is done through the Draft so you can’t really accelerate a rebuild. When you try to it almost always ends with your team in a never ending rebuild. Just ask Edmonton or Buffalo fans about that.

Point should get a lot more than 6.5m. If Trouba is so determined play in Detroit, can't the Wings just wait a year?

Oh no, this is a nightmare. That is an outrageous overpayment for Trouba
