Brodin to MTL Zucker to CGY

Created by: TanSor
Team: 2019-20 Minnesota Wild
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 18, 2019
Published: Apr. 21, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Both trades made at the draft

I'd be surprised if we trade Brodin, but I could see us doing it if we want to get a younger player on our blue line such as Kylington.

I mean all of the LD projected to go in the top 20 of the draft are all offensive defenseman. Sounds like MTL needs more of a rock on the back end. Plus, there's no guarantee any of these drafted players turn out to be what they are currently projected to be. Also anybody not drafted in the top 10 will probably be 3 years out of the NHL. Defenseman generally take longer than forwards to develop, too, so it could even be 4 years before the D they draft will crack an NHL roster. Is Montreal willing to wait that long for their top 4 D?

I’ll stop you right now, Mete was a 4th round pick, play 1 year junior after we drafted him, played on the top2 2 years in a row. So Ville Heinola can be 2-3 years from NHL ready, in 2020-2021 Romanov’s coming & Kulak is doing great right now. I know MTL might not be in the playoffs next year, I dont care. Value is there, but we need an offensive Dman like York or Heinola. Romanov is like Emelin was, but everything better ( skate, hands, shot )

MTL need a offensive LD, that’s their biggest need. A puck mover that can quarterback a PP. give me Broberg, York, Heinola, etc any day before Brodin.

Not to say Habs wouldn’t be interested in Brodin, but not for 15th overall. If MTL want a short term solution before Romanov or whoever they draft is ready. Sign Edler or trade for someone like Maatta (or someone similar) for a reasonable price and take chance with him.

Fair enough. I will say that Mete is a bit of an anomaly as players drafted outside of the top 10 usually don't follow the path he took. Look at Brannstrom, Foote, Valimaki, etc. These guys were drafted 2 years ago and haven't cracked the top 4 in the NHL (Brannstrom has 2 NHL games played and Foote has 0). Going back a year further, Jake Bean has 2 NHL GP, Dante Fabbro joined the NHL this year, and Logan Stanley hasn't played an NHL game. Of course there are players like McAvoy and Chychrun from this draft year that have played many games, but my whole point is that usually these guys taken around pick 15 won't play in the NHL for a while. I'd wager that Romanov will pull a Kaprizov and sign another contract with CSKA. That usually happens with KHL players, but I could be wrong. Montreal has a hole at LD that doesn't look like it will be filled by their prospects for at least 2 years, which is why I thought Brodin made a lot of sense for you but I can see Bergevin being unwilling to move the pick.

Problem is there isn't a whole lot that Montreal has that would fill our needs (right shot forward that has top 6 potential). I doubt you'd be willing to part with Suzuki, but he's really the only guy that would fill that need.

Why not just sign Gardiner, then? Brodin can move the puck well. He won't put up huge offensive numbers but he's good at getting the puck out of his own zone and getting it to a forward.

I think you can get more outta Calgary for Zucker and Eriksson Ek. I know Eriksson Ek has struggled but he's kinda like a Puljujarvi, might just need a change of scenery and he could explode. That's kinda selling low on him considering you're taking a cap dump back in Frolik for the deal. Zucker is easily worth Kylington and the 1st. I'd say Eriksson Ek has quite a bit more value than Frolik

Gardiner’s gonna sign 6M 6-7 years. We just need another D to play next year on the left side, Kulak’s not a legit top4 defenseman.

FYI, Romanov contract expired after the 2019-2020 season. He really wants to win the Gagarin cup before coming in North America, and you know what, is team won it this season. So he’ll be jumping in 2020-2021

You never know with Russians. There's a lot of speculation that Kaprizov was essentially forced to sign his KHL extension if he wanted to compete in the Olympics and play in the KHL once he retires from the NHL, but this isn't confirmed. There doesn't seem to be a great reason for it other than that since it sounds like his contract was around $1M which is a hare under what he could make playing for the Wild, plus he'd be off his ELC sooner to make big bucks. It's possible something like that could happen with Romanov, assuming this was what actually happened to Kaprizov. The KHL isn't anything like the NHL, there's a ton of shady **** that goes on. For Montreal's sake I hope he comes over sooner rather than later, I know first hand how much it sucks having to wait on a top talent that could give a big impact on your team.
