cant believe this realistic roster works under the cap

Description
if you think Dallas wouldn't do it, I think we can trade Russell for a 4th/5th no salary retained and sign a UFA dman to 1.5M instead like Engelland or Heed.

Also to free up some more cap space, we could choose to sign a cheaper backup to 1M.

Russell = negative value

Russell full value would be making 3M = 3rd rounder. Russell with negative value = 4th/5th rounder. Just because he has negative value does not mean he has no value at all.

I'd rather have the 4th or 5th rounder

Umm the negative value literally means that the value is below 0. That's what the word negative means. Generally plays that are negative value are assets that you need to pay to get rid of. And Russell more or less falls to this category.

As a DAL fan I wouldn't do it. Can certainly image better use for Honka and all that money we save.

I think you misinterpreted negative value. He means you would need to pay to get rid of him.

Personally I think his value is neutral. You may be able to move him to a team like Montreal which needs an LHD. Depending how FA goes.

I didn’t say Russell’s value is diminished, I said he has negative value, as in pay to move him

Russel is still a good 3rd pairing Defenceman.
He’s one of the top shot blockers in the league.
He’s a Right hand shot which is rare.
He would be perfect for playoff hockey. Yes, he makes too much money, but I think he’s worth a 4th round pick.

Actually he's a left shot defenseman.

Montreal needs a LHD, but not another smallish def.... like Russell. I prefer keeping Benn another year or invest in Chiarot or give a chance to a young prospect.

In that case, I was wrong. But to say that he has negative value is a bit too much. Yes he's overpaid but if anything that only lowers his value, not making him negative value. As I said above, if he was being paid accordingly, he's worth a 3rd rounder. Since he's not, he's worth a 4th/5th due to the extra million in AAV.

Also, I reversed the trade with Dallas and just shipped him to MTL for a 5th. That's more than fair value

This is the zaitsev dilemma... you can’t reason on hear.

I actually like Kris Russell, not a fan of his contract but he's been one of the few players who has played well for the Oilers the last couple years. I would say a third is fair value for him but because of the Oilers cap situation I can see him being dealt for a fourth/5th. He gets way to much hate because of his contract but is a great number 5 defenseman and a meh number four defenseman. Does a lot of the little things right and competes hard.
