Remove the Jared McCann piece and the Phil retention (PIT ain't retaining).

And then adjust things from there. Brodie + Jankowski + Kylington + 2020 2nd would be an interesting conversation starter. Especially since that package is about the same as the $6.8M cap hit for Phil. Likely ends up being a 1st round pick in 2019 instead of a 2020 2nd.

What in Brodie, Dubé, Kylington, Jankowski, 1st, 2nd gets Kessel, much less Kessel w/$2M retained, much less Kessel w/$2M retained and McCann?

I'll counter with Hornqvist, Bjugstad and Maatta for that package.

yes a top 4 defenseman. a bottom pairing defenseman with potential to be top four. our best prospect in dube. a bottom 6 centre and two high picks. for kessel who is 31 years old and mccann who put up 3rd line points in his first season. you are delusional buddy if you think you will get a better package than that. PIT is in sell mode dont overvalue your assets

They might be Calgary's "best" prospects, but that doesn't mean that they are worth much. Maybe you need to reconsider asset overvalue.

Pit is not in sell mode, at all. They will most likely move one of the $4M D (Maatta or Gudbranson) for cap space, but that's about it. Rutherford has talked about shaking up the team but moving Kessel isn't going to do that. Shaking up the team would be moving a member of the clique, like Letang. If he shakes the team is's not going to be for a return of a Maatta replacement (Brodie) and a bunch of pieces. (and yes, Calgary's 1st rounder is nothing more than a piece, #30 is not the same as #10)

you are welcome to believe that i guess.

if Pittsburgh doesn't make some wholesale changes (meaning moving 2-3 of their older talent letang, kessel, and if the offer is right malkin to bring in speed and youth) then you can look forward to missing the playoffs or having an early round exit next year. a much less talented yet far younger and faster islanders squad just wiped the floor of the two years removed stanley cup champions

the core on that team is past its prime you will soon be looking like LA or Chicago unless you deal your stars while they are still worth something

I want Rutherford to have a talk with Malkin and get teams that he would accept a trade to. Malkin (fill in all of his positives here). However, i consider him part of the problem. A much bigger part of the problem than Kessel. Plus, Malkin should net big time return even if his list in only a couple of teams. You can't "fix" if you don't move the problems. I often say "Don't treat the symptom, treat the cause." Trading Kessel not only doesn't treat the cause, it really doesn't even treat a symptom.

i have no idea how you are evaluating your players. in my eye kessel and malkin are essentially the same player besides their position where typically a centre is more coveted making malkin more valuable( with a slight skill gap). neither of these guys are the core of the problem for your team. but collectively they are the problem. old players with large contracts impact the teams ability to inject depth. obviously crosby is untouchable at this point and malkin is still an extremely effective 2nd line centre who would be first line centre on most other teams. if you trade kessels 6.8 million for 2-3 depth players at around 2 million a piece the penguins are immediately more competitive. maybe you lose 20-30 points on your second line winger position playing with malkin but you easily make that difference and more in your depth scoring and defensive capability with the two additional players
