Rangers aren't trading Miller, who is the only defenseman in the system with huge upside (there are several 2nd pair prospects), especially for a player who can become a UFA after the season.

This would be the equivalent of the Jets trading Vesalainen for Kreider. Don't think that happens.

Not quite. It's not bad, but I think NYR overpays a little here.

Isnt it pretty obvious when people trade big pieces in the offseason for a guy with 1 year left that they intend to, or base the trade off resigning the guy?

It would be pretty silly....yes silly, for the Rangers to risk a lottery pick just to trade for a one year rental.

K'Andre Miller is one of the untouchables for the rangers. He's outproduced the likes of Werenski, McAvoy, Trouba himself, etc. in their freshman seasons in NCAA. He's solid in the D-Zone and that's saying a lot since he's only switched to defense three years ago. Just ask how the Wild feel for trading Brent Burns when he was developing.
Trouba is a great defenseman and would stabalize the rangers back end, but he isn't worth our best defensive prospect (probably since leetch) or a potential lottery pick (especially in 2020 which is supposed to be somehow deeper than 2015 with generational talents in Lafreneiere and Byfeld followed by a ridiculous amount of talent in Holtz, Raymond, Lundell, etc).
The pick you get rid of is one of our extra first rounders (hopefully Dallas') and the players you package it with are between Pionk, Kreider, Namestnikov, Strome, and in terms of prospects one of lindgren/hajek.
