I love Nylander and I've backed him up and will continue to back him up..... BUT.. if this is the deal in front of Dubas, I'd drive Nylander to New Jersey myself. & You're taking Marleau's contract if he retires? .. What's Nylander's new address in New Jersey? I'll have him there by sunrise tomorrow.

That is actually a pretty big package, and most definitely now "buying low" as you've suggested.

Deal.

Buying low and giving up a 24 yo rhd on a great contract are not the same thing.
Shero is not giving up the draft capital for the mistakes Tor made

Gee, I think it's a big overpayment by the Devils. Leafs cap situation....thank you for taking Marleau. Nylander is overpaid but has the potential to play to it. and more. Leafs would be happy Severson. That's enough.

I understand this definitely bails out the Leafs, but it's a win/win in my opinion. The Devils really only need enough cap space to extend Hall in my scenario, so they can carry Marleau's cap hit for one season. The picks we're trading were all acquired at the deadline trading off parts – Boyle / Johansson / Lovejoy – and if we can turn that into Nylander that's a steal. There's no room for McLeod now that Hughes is coming to town, and he's disappointed so far anyway. I personally think Speers is going to be a solid NHLer, and Severson is a solid second pairing defensemen under team control for 3 more years. Maybe I overpaid on the draft picks, but Severson / Speers are the type of players TOR would want back in a trade.

I agree that Severson is the guy that Toronto would target in a trade, but the rest is a massive overpay. Just because you have extras, doesn't mean you have to move them all in 1 deal. If they didn't fit into the plan, they could be moved out for other assets that do fit. Or let them develop in the minors and see what they turn into and they may still be useful. Regardless, I love Nylander. But this is a big overpay for him.

How would you modify the trade to adjust? No picks at all?

If you're looking for just Nylander, Severson straight up is pretty close to fair value. If you're willing to take on Marleau's deal:

New Jersey Devils
William Nylander
Patrick Marleau
TOR 2020 2nd round pick
TOR 2021 5th round pick

Toronto Maple Leafs
Damon Severson
Blake Speers

seems more fair since New Jersey is taking big money off the Leafs cap

Take Marleau out and replace him with Zaitsev. Also drop the NSH 2nd rounder from the trade. If you do that, it is pretty even for both sides.

NJ receives:
Nylander
Zaitsev

TOR receives:
Severson
McLeod
Speers
2019 BOS 2nd
2019 DAL 3rd

I think if the Devils were going to use their picks it would be a D-man like Trouba not another forward. Plus the Devils have one of the worst Defensive cores in the NHL, I cannot see them trading a 24 year old
RHD with potential.

Also you lost me at Speers being an NHLer; even at the end of the season when the Devils roster was 75% AHL players Speers didn't get a call up. I thought of him more as a career AHLer.
