Nylander and a Copp offer sheet

Team: 2019-20 Buffalo Sabres
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 24, 2019
Published: Apr. 24, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
- do our neighbors to the north a little favor. This probably solves TORs Cap issues.

- I keep seeing reference of william Karlsson being available. It’s a nice idea, but I keep thinking, to get value added and succeed in the league you have to find the NEXT Karlsson. And I believe that is Copp. His underlying numbers both O xG and D xG are both significantly above average. Add in the fact that the comp for him is only a 2nd round pick? I think it’s a good low cost option at 2C.

Not sure why Copp would want to take a 1-year deal from anyone.

Dude Copp isn't signing no one year OS. He's going to want multi year deal.

Because it’s probably a much bigger AAV than what WPG can offer and it gives him the opportunity to get big minutes and cash out on his next deal.

You guys know that young players mostly prefer to have shorter deals while they are still in RFA territory so that their team doesn’t get UFA years right?

Copp probably goes ufa, WPG has more important signings, Copp has arbitration, and WPG dont have enough space unless he wants them too imo

Only certain players. And they are the exception and not the rule. If Copp signs a one year deal coming off of a career year, he is putting himself at huge risk in the case that he gets injured, or regresses (either because of bad luck or a lack of skilled line mates). When your stock is at a high you sell, and that applies to contracts too.

Now Copp's contract offer is something else entirely. Paying 3.25mill for a bottom 6 guy who is coming off a career year is not smart. The key to being a great GM isn't finding the next Karlsson, it's not signing bottom 6 players to contracts they haven't earned. Tampa was great cause of all the hidden gems they found, but now that those players are all getting paid they're going to start really regretting some of the 4-6mill contracts they've signed. This is a scaled down version, but that doesn't make it better.

There's short contracts and then there's one-year deals. No player is going to risk life and limb for a team that isn't willing to show him some love.

You’re logic confuses me. Why would 2 years be fine but 1 wouldn’t? If BUF sells Copp on the fact that he would be the 2nd line center and get 18min a night, why wouldn’t he take the pay raise now, AND set himself up for a big long term deal in 12mo....

That being said, a 2 year deal at 3.25 is do-able from BUF as well. I don’t think this is the sticking point guys lol.

So I’ll take that as WPG would not match the offer then?

Because he still wouldn't be a UFA, which means he is still Buffalo's to re-sign. Buffalo holds all the cards and Copp gets no security from this. If he's not going to be a UFA, he's much better off taking 3x$2M than 1x$3.25.

Probably not, but what they might do is just up the length on their offer. If I'm not mistaken you are obligated to match the length. It would probably make that 3.25mill deal a little bit more of a gamble.

Just to be clear 3.25mill is an overpay and that's why offer sheets are so bad. You're overpaying by virtue of the process.

His underlying numbers are good. You’re taking a chance

The Jets really need to try and sign Copp, they should trade Lowry and keep Copp.
