DRW 19-20 helping out TOR

Created by: AZWings
Team: 2019-20 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 29, 2019
Published: Apr. 25, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Salary dump of Marleau; I know that just a 2nd and Glendening wouldn't get Sandin. Honestly keeping 8 D is not preferred but I would suspect that at least 1 of Ericsson, Daley, and Green will be on LTIR most of the season.

Or you could always just buy out Ericsson since you now have the cap and he's useless anyways

Easy does it there. Sandin isn’t moving. Certainly not in a deal to move Marleau. The kid’s Good. our top prospect.

The plan is broken because Marleau will not waive his full nmc to go to Detroit.

You are preaching to the choir! If Ericsson was going to be bought it would've happened couple ago and he's not going to be traded either Holland is just going to let him play out his contract and retire. It's another reason why The Wings need a new GM. Holland is just too personally invested with the players. It's not a bad thing as long as it doesn't prevent you from doing what's best for the team.

But thats a good thing. There is too much that could go wrong with a 35+ contract. There are plenty of teams looking to dump some cap.

Slightly off topic question: If you trade a player with a 35+ contract can you retain salary?

Yes you can, even if the player is retired.

I wouldn't say worthless he would have been 7th in points this year for the Wings. I do agree Detroit shouldn't trade for him.

I would have agreed 2 years ago, but with only 1 year left I don't see the point carrying that pain forward for another year. Especially with the health issues he, Daley, and Green all have.

Let's say he does agree to waive. Hypothetically, what would TOR package up to get rid of him?

Trade him to the Wings with the stipulation that the Wings agree to buy him out of his contract and that the Leafs agree re-sign him on a more team friendly deal. Or they could trade him to the Wings with the stipulation that the Wings agree to trade him back with salary retained. Or he could just waive that NMC

First option would get shot down by the league. Marleau is in a 35+ so I don’t know if they could get away with it. The second option is in violation of the cba. Marleau could not be traded back to the leafs for 1 full calendar year. The third option will never happen. If marleau were to retire he could be traded for futures but it win’t Be sandin.
