If Marner wants 11 let him walk

Created by: jloose
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 26, 2019
Published: Apr. 26, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Obviously highly unlikely, but I would cal Marners (more likely his agents) bluff on an offer sheet. He wants to play in his home town and if hes ballsy enough to sign and offer sheet then you try the following:

take the 4 1st's and 11 mil space sign one of panarin/skinner/karlsson.
Brown/Zaitsev move for space
At that point you have 4mil in cap space and 3 1sts round pick in the next 2 drafts.

fill the RD slot with: Kap or Johnsson + 1st + prospect + ....

Still left with 4 1sts in 2020 and 2021 (lots of ammo for further trades)

I wouldn't be taking 4 1sts that will be between 16-32. You'd be better to match and then trade him.

Can’t trade marner after an offersheet match for 1 filull calendar year from date of first refusal.

You also will not be able to sign any of those UFA’s. They will be signed early morning July 1st about 3 hours before an offersheet comes in on marner.

That trade for Jared Spurgeon is g-d awful! And if somehow the Leafs caved into Marner's ridiculous demand, I imagine they would look to trade Matthews. You could not have 3 forwards making $11 million or more, plus Matthews' deal only runs 5 years, and you can bet his next contract will quite a bit more. Perhaps Toronto looks once again to LA and deal him for Doughty, Kempe and their 2 1st rounders in 2019 (one of which is our pick) and then draft Dylan Cozens 4th overall. Kempe would take over at 3C and you'd be free to trade Kadri, since I believe Cozens is NHL ready and would slot in behind Tavares. So, at least the Leafs would be spreading that $11 million around their lineup and Doughty is not too shabby of a D, and he would be reunited with Muzzin.

Here's the hard part about the offer sheet from TOR's perspective. The different between $11M and $10.1M is VAST from the Leaf's perspective (4 1sts vs 2 1sts, 1 2nd, 2 3rd) BUT to the buyer and to Marner...it's just $900k. So what happens if a team that has cap...like the Blackhawks offer sheet him 5 years $10.1M...AFTER this years draft? That's (2) 1sts (NOT the #3OA) a 2nd and 3rd. Those are still indeed 1st round picks, but they could easily be 20-30 vs having Marner. HUGE loss for the Leafs. Same problem for TBL and Point.

As an Isles fan, i say NO. Why offer sheet him? You lose 4 1sts and have to pay him 11.5M per year. Not worth it in the end.

I think you just have to work something out with the kid. He wants to play here we want him here. Something will work in the middle.

Or just trade him(his rights) to a team with a high draft pick and get a solid RHD coming back. Example- To the NYR for 2019 1st(Kakko) and Deangelo or Pionk and maybe something else small. That way you get a top 4 RHD and a replacement for Marner and you get to keep everyone else. Unless you really want to move Nylander.
