If D gt C realistically

Description
If D>C for the Flyers FO, and Frost is ready, they can add that veteran D man by buying low and take care of several long-term extensions to RFAs (Provorov, Sanheim, Konecny). I'm not advocating this approach or priority on D; Just illustrating a scenario to expect if the Flyers prioritize a veteran D acquisition and stick with an internal approach to the 2C/3C hole.

I'm also doubting the Flyers will splurge on a long-term UFA contract on D here to either Stralman or Myers, the usual suspects of speculation. I also regard Karlsson as a pie in the sky target. Getting him to sign here after the Flyers' poor season when he will get great money elsewhere is just not realistic. That leaves the trade route, and Chucky two trades is able to wheel and deal.

With Demers, the Flyers are buying low on a player with some injury history, but all the "veteran" qualities they seem to be emphasizing. Demers is a two-way defenseman with a rough around the edges play-style that fits Flyer hockey. Just how the Flyers configure the D will depend on the form of the players, particularly young Phil Myers, who could develop into a top pairing D man. Regardless, the Flyers would now have 3 right-sided D men to play with plus a better balance of youth and experience. For Arizona, they have a surplus on D, a need to address forward, and a preference for cheaper, younger talent due to financial constraints. Hagg and a pick may be seen as fair value from their side to cut costs, but perhaps a better round pick would be needed to close the deal.

The Nichushkin buy low is a carry over from another roster I published. Just happy to get more feedback on that outside the box idea of taking a buy low swing for a third line wing role there. Paired with a play maker in Frost, that might prove really interesting.

I like Demers quite a bit, and was hoping that Hexy would sign him back when he was a UFA but I'm not convinced that the Yotes will want to move him. Still, he'd make sense but you probably need to give up more than Hagg and a 6th to get him.

Also, send MacDonald to the AHL and save yourself some money.

Took your advice, and bumped it up to a third. The premise with the Yotes dealing anyone like Demers is how badly burned they were with injuries last year. It really killed their season. They may want to shed salary of injury risk players (who are still marketable) in favor of UFA forward signings or trades to address their scoring woes. I'm convinced they will do this with someone regardless of whether the Flyers partner with them in a trade.

Just leaving AMac where he is as there's no need for more $ now in this build. He's fine as depth.

Thanks for the feedback.

Actually this is the kind of veteran I hope Fletchers pursuing. Reasonable contract and term.

It definitely makes sense, but I'd think they'd want fair value for Demers so the better pick is probably more realistic. Plus, there's definitely going to be competition to get him as you mentioned so a 3rd over a 4th probably makes this deal more attractive to the Yotes. That being said, if all it would take is a fourth and Hagg then I'm sure plenty of us will drive Hagg to the airport lol.

Fair though I have two thoughts there:

1. I don't expect them (or see a reason to) carry 8 defensemen.
2. Sending him down opens up more cap space to either use later on in the year or use now to bring in another forward in the event that they don't think Frost is NHL ready.

There's a good amount of space without sending AMac to the AHL, but sending him to the Phantoms should give you like 2-3M more to play with. I'm not sure if someone jumps out as an ideal candidate, but it gives you more flexibility to improve the roster.

Also, the Phantoms are likely going to need some bodies on defense IIRC; none of the European skater prospects are coming over from what I've seen so they only have 4 or 5 defensemen heading into next season as of now. That could obviously change, of course.

I thought Hogberg was going to be coming over. I guess we will see. You are probably right, that they won't carry 8 D. The fun question is whether they will carry a 14th forward or a 3rd goalie after the raft of injuries that burned them in goal last season. I have no idea, but I am cracking up at how it must feel to be Fletch looking at that issue. It's unconventional to carry 3, but after using 8 rofl. Here is the updated roster.
