the word realistic should be kept very far away from the title of this team.
Jay27 and Cardiak liked this.

I'd love to hear your reasoning on how that deal with the Canes is fair for Carolina.

For some reason, I doubt the Canes of all teams are going to pay money for someone not on the roster, even for assets in return.
The oilers trade is close. Downgrade the leafs 2nd to a 3rd (and maybe have a condition that it could be upgraded back to the 2nd) and its good. That being said, The oilers dont need more centres, and so probably decline. They are the Oilers though so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

You obviously no nothing about buyout's? First off Marleau is a 35+ signee. You can't trade a player and then have a team buy him out and then sign him for a cheaper deal it's not aloud. His caphit would still be on the books.

The Avs and Caps did it with Orpik in a similar circumstance You can buyout a 35 plus player, but his cap hit still (6.25m) retained. Now I admit it is fantasy that the Marleau and going to traded, bought out and then resigned by the Leafs. A 50% chance that Marleau truly retires and his cap hit is traded to a team with cap space, similar to the Datsyuk deal.

Here's my Marleau and Nylander deals. IF Marleau retires and his cap is traded a team with cap space for a second rounder. No cost in $$$ for Arizona (or the other team). Nylander is traded to team that thinks he is better than his play last season. But this team needs to take on virtually all of his 7m cap hit for five years, and the modest 4.9m cash outlay. Nylander for a third rounder.

If Toronto traded Marleau to Carolina, who then bought him out, his cap hit would stay on Carolina's books, not Toronto's. In this situation, Toronto would be free to sign Marleau again similar to how Washington signed Brooks Orpik.

However, as you mentioned, the Hurricanes would not receive any cap relief for buying out Marleau, so there wouldn't be any incentive for them to do so. Additionally, Marleau would have to waive his NMC to approve the trade in the first place, which is unlikely.

So this scenario is still unlikely to happen, but not for the reason you state.

Leafs aren't trading BOTH Nylander and Kadri. Someone has to play centre....and it won't be Thornton. And Puju, is not an NHLer.

I don’t like either of the deals for Toronto, I have no interest is anything being received from Edmonton unless it’s Mcdavid, Draisaitl, RNH or Klefbom. Never trade a forward of nylander’s potential for a top 4 defensemen; Edmonton learnt this lesson when trading hall... I’m not saying nylander is a good as hall, however he still has elite potential even though he’s had 1 bad year.

The Leaf fans have done the impossible and created the singularity of Pesce and Marleau in the same deal. This is perfection

Actually i think if you traded Marleau the cap hit would go to Carolina and they could buy him out (keeping the whole 6.25M hit) then he could go back and sign with Toronto as long as Toronto did not retain anything. why Carolina or anyone else would actually do this is beyond me but its the dream of every boy wearing Leaf pajamas.

And the team that trades for him would have to pay his full 3 million dollar bonus. I really don’t think it’s even a dream
