What ? Mtl says no, Vegas says yes. Not even a close trade here. But Mtl doesn’t need another center ( Domi-Danault-Kotkaniemi-Weal-Thompson-Poehling-Suzuki ).

Eakin is not an upgrade on Domi or Danault, and he isn't going to be taking Kotkaniemi's spot, so he doesn't really bring anything to MTL, and while Smith is an upgrade on Drouin or Tatar, the difference isn't worth giving up a 1st round pick. The value is about right, just not the right trade partner.

I think both teams say no. MTL not interested in either player. Smith was too good for Vegas to trade for just a 1st round pick.
