Wait a year and sign him as a FA or trade some picks, sign him and have him helping your team next year. How long will it take for 2nd/3rd to make an impact in the NHL, if they make it at all?

Agreed. The 2nd/3rd round picks are more of a commodify in my opinion. The more you can stock up on, the better chance you have of one or two paying off. It's just a matter of numbers. Maybe about 5 second rounders per season (just a guess), end up being NHL regulars.

Well, I think this was a great trade for both teams, since Adam Fox has a lot of potential and he would stand out more in New York, while the two picks are great for the Hurricanes.

Not really.. He publicly stated he wasn't going to sign with Carolina and NYR gave up picks for a player who said he wanted to sign there

For both teams. The Hurricanes got 2 2nds for a pending UFA. The real loser here is Calgary.

Well it’s still a great trade for Carolina, because they got 2 2nds for free. But yeah, it was obviously well worth it for the Rangers to give that up for a player who is becoming one of the best defensemen in the NHL.

Both teams ended up winning. There's circumstances to this trade because Fox publicly stated he wasn't going to sign in Carolina and there were very strong rumours that he wanted to sign with the Rangers. The rangers gave up 2 2nd rounds picks for a guy who was likely going to sign there anyways and Carolina got picks for a guy who was never going to play a game for them.

A Norris Trophy winner for two 2nds. Not bad (:

In all seriousness he was gonna become a Ranger whether it was from trade or Free Agency.

What confuses me is why the Rangers would give up anything, when Fox could have been had for free on July 1.

Anyone have any insights?

Funny looking back at these after he wins the Norris

Most think this is a robbery for the Rangers (which it is), but Fox wouldn't sign with us anyways, so we either got this or lost Fox for nothing. I still wish we could've got more for a Norris winning defenseman, though he wasn't as highly touted at the time of this trade.

Carolina got a 2nd + 3rd from NYR even though Fox wasn't going to sign there, and was going to sign with NYR anyways 2 weeks later when his rights expired.

Wow, that's a lot to give up for Fox. They must feel that he's a sure thing.

Well I guess he was 🤷‍♂️

Adam Fox wasn't going to sign in Carolina so getting a 2nd and 3rd is decent value.

People really forget about the context of this trade and act like the Hurricanes gave away an elite defenseman for pennies. They had to make this trade if they wanted anything for him.

Didn't he state he wanted to play for the Rangers too? If he hadn't been traded to the Rangers he would've finished college then sign with them as a UFA. So one could say the Rangers lost because they gave up assets for a player that would've come and played for them from free.

I actually disagree, Fox could have signed there as a UFA in a few months if I'm not mistaken (I could be mistaken though).

You are definitely mistaken, he is 23 years old! So I highly doubt he signs there in a few months, which is also halfway through the season.

You don't understand what I'm saying. College players rights run out when they graduate from college. Adam Fox was in his last year of college. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure his right were expiring and the canes were going to lose him for nothing.
