Re-tool After Playoff Disappointment

Description
The 2018-2019 season began with a learning curve. The team was mediocre while getting used to the way new coach Peters wanted to play. Over the middle of the regular season, the Flames were one of the best teams in the league. After the all star break they cooled off, and were playing like a playoff team, but not nearly as dominant as they had been between November - February. This culminated in a disappointing early exit from the playoffs, losing to a team that was playing their best hockey at the right time and seemed to find the formula that completely shut down the Flames by about midway through the second game.

So where do the Flames go from here, and are they really as good as they were in the regular season, or as bad as they were in the playoffs? In my opinion, this team is one that can absolutely compete for the division title again next year. The playoffs exposed their lack of talented puck carriers as all the offense seems to flow through Gaudreau, who had his time and space cut down by the Avs.

For next season, the Flames will look to sign their key RFA's, and perhaps will need to free up some cap space to do so. Going forward the team can move its defensive depth to find the help at top 6 forward that previous season's UFA signing James Neal was supposed to provide. Additionally, the Flames need to find a solution in net for the 2019-2020 season. If the right deal exists out there to bring in another core piece for the Gio & Johnny 3 year window, then I think the team is willing to spend its draft currency to acquire it.

RFA's
Tkachuk - Signs to about the same % of cap as Monahan & Johnny did at the time of their deals (9%).
Bennett - Bets on himself with a medium term deal for a reasonable raise (to about 3% of cap) after his solid work in the playoffs.
Rittich - Similar to Bennett's deal (short term, about 3% of cap) but a bit more money as he established himself as at least a platoon level starter.
Mangiapane - One year deal with the expectations he wants to build on his solid back half of the year for a larger raise after next season (about 1% of cap)
Valiev - Re-signed for AHL due to all of the recent D graduations (league min, 1 year)
Quine - Moved to / signs with another a team with less depth
Lomberg - Not qualified
Rychel - Qualified
Lazar - Moved to / signs with another a team with less depth
Foo - Qualified
Healy - Not qualified
McDonald - Not qualified
Pollock - Not qualified

UFA
Fantenberg - Only still in Calgary if both Brodie and Stone are moved out otherwise signs with team where he'll be an everyday player.
Varlamov - Signs a 1 year show me deal where he will parlay playing behind a solid team into a long term deal with another team next season (<6% of cap)
Smith - A good plan B on a 1 year @ 2.75M deal (about <4% of cap)
Hathaway - kept unless another team blows away what the Flames can afford to pay him (1% of cap)
Everyone else is gone to the FA pool.

Trades
1.
CGY
  1. 2019 4th round pick (OTT)
Additional Details:
Ottawa can afford to move this pick to pickup a Dman that can play alongside and mentor their younger LHS guys next year.
OTT
  1. Stone, Michael
Additional Details:
No worse than a #5 D on a team that will need them next year. Ottawa can likely even flip him at the deadline for a better pick after he actually plays (after his blood clot injury).
2.
CGY
  1. 2019 2nd round pick (PIT)
Additional Details:
Tallon's familiarity with Frolik, and their need for a defensively responsible forward to round out their line up has them willing to part with their late second to get him.
FLA
  1. Frolík, Michael
Additional Details:
Frolik was disgruntled with his role and Calgary needs to clear some cap space for their goal tending.
3.
CGY
  1. Ho-Sang, Joshua [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
Islanders may be looking to move him due to attitude issues. Could be a fit in Calgary as they are looking for strong puck carriers with a bit more offensive flair in their system.
NYI
  1. Lazar, Curtis [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
Hard working but not offensively gifted player seems a better fit as a depth RW in a Trotz coached team.
4.
CGY
  1. Drouin, Jonathan
  2. 2019 3rd round pick (MTL)
Additional Details:
Calgary gets a cost controlled young player that has tremendous puck carrying ability, which the top 6 of their roster lacks outside of Gaudreau.
MTL
  1. Brodie, TJ
  2. Jankowski, Mark
  3. 2019 1st round pick (CGY)
Additional Details:
After a disappointing season Montreal is willing to move on from their enigmatic winger. They get back a #2/3 D that either helps them get into the playoffs or whom they can move out for another first next year at the deadline. They bring in a rangy centre who can kill penalties as well plus upgrade their draft picks this year.

I agree there will be some speed bumps moving him up to the top pair as he is still a younger player learning the game, but I think he has all the tools to succeed there. Like Brodie, he is a tremendous skater and can leg the puck out of trouble as well as make a good first pass. I think playing with Gio will really elevate his game. Not as worried about him playing on his off side as he already did in Carolina.
Alternatively, you send Andersson to the top pair, while Hanifin learns the right side on the second pair with Valimaki. and Hamonic drops down to mentor Kylington. The extra D is Fantenberg who has also played on both sides at the NHL level.

I figured Montreal would only move him if the offer for him looked like a win to them. Drouin still has tremendous upside (I feel he puts up a PPG season within this contract) and is on a pretty reasonable contract for a top 6 winger these days.

What sort of offer would you make to Buffalo for Reinhart?

I don't see Buffalo making him available given his steady improvement over the last few years. I think they also don't make a good trade partner with the Flames as their defense is already fairly deep and Calgary is likely looking to move out a defenseman for help up front. If the Buffalo were looking to move him to the Flames I would expect that they would want Bennett, Jankowski and the 2019 first pick, and I don't think the Flames should ship out that much.

Thanks for the evaluation of the Buffalo defense. Your offer is quite compelling, 2 centers and a first for a RW. While I agree the Betterall has made great strides improving the defense, IMO he is still considering moving a RHD and the team could use another LHD. I do not get to watch Brodie, but last year when there were rumors that the Flames were considering moving a LHD, I thought Brodie would be good fit. So when I saw your trade of Brodie, TJ, Jankowski, Mark and 2019 1st round pick for Drouin, I sort of thought that may work for Reinhart. Reinhart has improved every year, is younger, has more pts and goals than Drouin I sort of thought that there may be a fit and the return may be bit larger (obviously not much) or at least equal. Again I appreciate your comment.
