Description
Mitch signs for 6 x 9.5
That’s the same AAV as Kucherov and Stone both of whom have put up significantly better stats for longer period then Marner. It puts him him behind only Kane and soon behind Panarin. It pays him 30% more then Nylander and 15% more then Draisaitl. The Draisaitl comparison is really the best one. He signed for 2/3 of what his generational partner did. Marner at 9.5 vs Matthews 11.6 is only 20% lower.

So with this done and with both Kapanen and Johnnsson signed you have to move 2 of Brown, Kadri and Nylander then fill out with one 4million dollar defenseman and the rest have to be guys well under 1 million. Fortunately the leafs have a bunch in Moore, Petan, Goat, Rosen, etc

I have chosen Brown because he played jr in Erie with McDavid and had 128 points. I think he can play 1st line wing with Draisaitl and McDavid.

Kadri is two time 30 goal guy. He could play the wing but I think is good 2nd line center with RNH on wing and maybe Chiasson.

I also chose Kadri because he IMO has worn out his welcome. Plus Nylander was “promised” he would not be moved. I don’t think Dubas will make that move unless he has to. Moving kadri will be accepted more easily in the Leaf dressing room.

Point is Oil need top 6 talent more then they need a 2,3 defenseman like Larsson.

Why not Carolina ????
I think that ship has sailed. With the run the hurricane are on they will not be trading Pesce, Hamilton or Slavin. Those are the only guys who you would want from them.

Mitch is great but he is an assist machine not a goal scorer. Ovechkin makes significantly more then Backstrom and Matthews should make significantly more then Marner.

Additional Details:
Oilers have already lost the Hall/Larsson deal and not being realistic about his value would be a mistake. Adding 2 x top 2 line players both on good contracts is a decent return. Plus they have Jones, Bear and Bouchard coming up soon on defence.

  3. 2019 2nd round pick (TOR)
  4. 2019 3rd round pick (TOR)

newsflash: marner is not going to take a penny less than 10m from the leafs nor should he.

He may, but if he does it should be for the max term.

I would let him sit if the number is that high.

I don’t believe he will sign an offer sheet and if he does you take the picks plus cap relief.

It means you can sign both johnsson and kapanen to term deals. Plus you can sign or trade for a top pair RHD.

It’s possible that the leafs filling that need would make the team better in the long term then keeping an overpaid Marner.

Team wouldn’t be as entertaining but most fans would take a run of boring hockey like the are seeing in Carolina right now.

Signing bonuses are taxed at 25% and marner has 14 endorsement deals and rising. So does that mean we can pay him 6.5m? Since he will make more money than kucherov on a 6.5m compared to 9.5m in Tampa.

You sir are just loving your tax facts aren’t you. You just sit back and throw out that fact to stir things up when it gets boring.

Well done.

I agree, Marner should sign for less due to the lower taxes he will pay on the signing bonus. Guessing 90 percent will be paid as a bonus just like Tavares and Matthews

This is simple guys..

Matthews comparable are McDavid, Tavares, Eichel and the like. He has in his 3 years proven that he is better then Eichel and not at McDavid level just yet. The contract he signed at 11.6 is appropriate for his status as “generational” first pick center.

Marner is good and has really shown he maybe should have been drafted 3rd. His comparable are , rantanen, aho, nylander, Pastrnak, gaudreaux, All really good wings who came into the league in the past 4 years and are not number 1 drafts. Personally I would take Pastrnak or Rantanen over Mitch. I rank Mitch tied with gaudreauex ahead of aho and with nylander ranking last in this group. Pastrnak makes less because he signed a year ago. Today he would maybe sign a deal for 8. In a real world Mitch would sign for about the Draisaitl number but because it is Toronto he will be overpaid. Like I said before, 9.5 x 8 is what it should be. I predict 9.5 x 6 and that it takes until the end of September.
