Jefflers pegged Marner

Created by: jfalstaff
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: May 3, 2019
Published: May 3, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The fair value for Marner is clear: it's about 11% of the cap over 6-7 years. There's no question about that. Here's what the roster looks like after Dubas, having learned from the Nylander negotiation, plays hardball with Marner's agent.

Kapanen and Johnsson get 1 year bridges.

If Johnsson is eligible for offer sheet....he gets better than that . Even arbitration,, likely better.

One of the biggest mistakes Dubas can make would be signing Marner to a 5 year deal, him and matthews must be on different contracts term-wise.

I'd prefer Pesce to Hamilton. Then you could pay Johnsson something close to what he's worth.

CAR values Pesce more, I thought.

I trust in Mirtle. 24/25 year olds who have ~60 NHL games in a top-6 role don't get multiyear contracts over $2m. Bring on the arbitrator.

There is none. No player of Marner's age, playing his position, and with his record has ever made over 11% of the cap on his second contract. That's the fair market value.

No player had ever made the percentage of the cap Matthews got over a 5 year deal off their entry deal. Then it happened.

You’re really missing the point here. Rfa negotiations have changed

That is a terrible argument thought. That's more of an opinion. The thing that has changed is more teams have decided to gamble on signing early and not waiting till the end. Anyone in their right mind knows the leafs hold the ultimate cards here. He owes us 5 more years of play under the rules of the NHL. We own him if he wants to sit out there are other options

1. He owes you four more years of play under the rules of the NHL.
2. What's changed is players wanting big money for short term (5 or 6 years) off their entry deals so they hit UFA at a younger age.
3. It's not an opinion, it's based on recent signings.

But Matthew's productivity is unprecedented in the salary cap era. His goal scoring comps was, like, Lindros. There were no post-FIRST-lockout comps to point to. And so you're gonna make contract history when you have a guy making goal-scoring history.

Marner's not quite in that class, unless you rate primary assist rates to be as impressive as goal scoring. But I don't think, despite what Faris would like to think, anyone does.
