Stanley Cup Experience

Description
Bare with me here... The Lightning lacked size, toughness and the so-called "grit" that is needed for playoff hockey. Added Ferland and Maroon (Jon Cooper coached Maroon in their NAHL days) for that reason. The last team to win a Stanley Cup without any players on its roster with previous experience was the 94 Rangers. Added OrpiK and Kuhnhackl for that reason. I understand many Lightning fans will say that we should use younger guys in the system, but the cup window is now. I am willing to keep them in the minors if it means winning a cup next year.

Point gets a bridge deal, Lightning maintain a pretty tight salary structure (shown by Kucherov bridge deal), this bridge deal will take him to the end of RFA and he will get PAIDDDD.

Traded away Johnson for picks because he has the most value of guys that can be traded. Palat was a tougher trade so I pretty much just picked a random team that would allow his cap to get off the books and salvage something. Both Johnson and Palat would have to waive their trade clauses.

This team won 62 games for a reason so major changes are not needed, the Lightning should keep Killorn and Miller for the fact of size and they have good chemistry with line mates and for their defensive aspects they bring. Johnson is not a driver of play, evidenced by his lack of assists and Palat cannot stay healthy.

Paquette's not getting longer than a year if he does resign. He's that 13th forward mould perfectly where he could just as easily be swapped with a top line guy from the AHL.

Your logic is sound but I can't see them moving off of Palat. Johnson definitely, but I don't think it'll be this season.

Palat is a really tough trade. I figured Paquette was getting some security with this new contract considering he had a career year in points, I believe. Plus Jon Cooper LOVES the guys that came up with him through the AHL. Its why Palat and Johnson are always in the Top 6 when they sometimes shouldn't be.

Well I dont think Cooper has much leverage anymore .. most tenured coach in NHL and time for change .. get rid of the home grown shrimps asap or team will NEVER win. ..

OBVIOUSLY I agree with get experiece/grit/ leadership approach or team will never win

On interesting note .. I thought Paquette had good year and developed nicely including PK .. Tampa may lose him to a team that sees him as 3rd line center upgrade .. Erne totally replaceable but Paqueete will be interesting.. my bet .. he is signed by Tampa in next several weeks.

And YES Disneyland tickets for the bridge baffons.. they would all fail GM 101

I was on the train of “Fire Cooper” after being swept but I quickly got off because you don’t fire a coach that wins 62 games. It’s tough to justify that because then who do you hire?

Erne is replaceable but he will be back because of 2 reasons: 1) first full season in NHL last year, can’t replace after that small of a sample size. 2) bigger forward that Tampa doesn’t have, he just needs to understand that he’s 210 lbs and play like a net-front player. He plays like a perimeter player

Paquette may leave but he has a role on a perennial contender, tough to leave when you have a solidified role.

As for bridge deals...... only young players who have elite potential get higher bridge deals in the Lightning system. Gourde didn’t get one, and neither did Miller. Johnson and Palat were figured to have elite potential after Palat was a Calder nominee and Johnson scored 72 points one season so they got small bridges and they haven’t panned out. Kucherov got one for obvious reasons and Point should as well but they have been consistent for the past few seasons.

You hire a proven Cup winning coach who doesnt act like a disinterested unapologetic whimp .. that's who. There is a length of time as a coach where change is needed. Time is now.

Owner season ticket holder letter giving a vote of confidence is beginning of the end as team needs leadership bad .. behind bench and on ice.

On bridge deals.. tell me why POINT would do it? All the Disneyland crowd sees through eyes of what is best for Tampa and rationalizes .. Points last 2 years production is unparalleled for a bridge deal .. as is never.

Okay so give me names of proven winners that aren’t taken and have a system that could win in today’s NHL? You seem to be in the crowd of “Fire Cooper” but don’t provide solutions, names of coaches etc. The only guy I would bring in for Cooper is Quenneville but he’s off the market. Just because Cooper doesn’t show the media that he’s interested doesn’t mean much of anything. We could have Melnyk and Dorion just remember that.

Okay as for Point.... once again why would Point leave? Players like to win.... Tampa wins. Point can leave sure, but whose giving up those draft picks and paying his salary? He’s not going to Ottawa, Edmonton, or New Jersey and willing to mortgage the prime years of his career in losing. On top of having money lost through taxes. All the teams with no state tax are in the upper half of the NHL right now so they can’t provide compensation for offer sheets.

If Lightning get bounced next year in first or second round or early in the third round then YES absolutely find a new coach. You cannot fire coaches who lose in game 7’s of conference finals with no for sure replacement who take the team over the hump. And that person has to be a bonefide bet they will win the cup but there is no such thing.
