Marleau's chances of being a leaf next season are slim. As I stated in the deal, the ordeal with his wife and kids... He wouldn't let them go to SJS without joining them...

Marleau chances of being a leaf next year are probably about 98%

Hey know who’s still playing hockey? The sharks, and they’re in a cap crunch, they can’t afford Marleau

I'm starting to see this pop up more often. Do you have a source for this, Gronk?

Marleau off the leafs payroll helps in alot of ways. And it'd probably help his family too.. winters in southern Ontario are long, and a little hard on the head..

Rumors by leaf bloggers...sure. Someone credible? No.

Let’s use logic here.
1. Marleau wants a cup, so he wants to stay on a contender.
2. Contenders don’t have 6.25 in cap space for a bottom six forward.
3. It isn’t practical for any team to buy him out.
4. Ya he’s staying

If he is moved it would be foolish to think his salary wouldn’t be retained.

Okay, what contender, presumably a stronger contender than the leafs, can just go ahead and swallow over 3 million?

Canes, Avs, bruins CBJ Preds. Remember we could also take cap back and pay to dump it.

Imagine moving marleau and Kadri to preds and taking back turris. We can then dump turris to any team with sweeteners.

The Bruins????I mean, ya, eat half and take Backes and then sure. Provided that a. Marleau waives his NMC (not likely to be all the way on the east coast), and b. Backes waives to go to toronto (not really sure he wants to go to Canada). CBJ are not contenders moving forward, and I'm not so sure the Preds are. If I'm Marleau, I look at Toronto, and Nashville, and think Toronto is the better team.

Marleau for Backes 1 for 1. Marleau is the better player and has less term. Backes has an 8 team trade list and I’d bet my left nut that Toronto is in it.

K. Then boston isn't a trade partner. They have their own cap issues.

This doesn’t effect your cap. Marleau can still play. If he couldn’t he would retire or go on ltir. I would have to check Boston’s cap for next season, not a team I usually trade with lol.

well first off, I'm not on the team, it's their cap, not my cap. The Bruins have significant cap issues of their own as they try to extend McAvoy, Carlo, and Heinen. They have absolutely ZERO room to add another dead weight contract. Saying it doesn't effect their cap at all is utterly absurd. It destroys it.

Backes 6mx3 can’t play hockey/Marleau 6.25mx1 can play hockey cap destroyed?

Backes has an 8 team trade list... might as well be a full nmc with the way he plays.

Every argument you ever used for Marleau is about to come back and haunt you lol.

The only issue I see is that if Backes doesn’t have to waive for the leafs than we would need to honour his ntc. That would be a no go.

Backes has actually played pretty well in the columbus series. That said, I agree, he stinks. If you want to do Marleau for Backes....go right ahead. Point being unless the leafs would take Backes, they aren't a partner.

Some differences of note between Marleau and Backes:
Backes doesn't have no move protection, so the threat of sending him to the minors to free up a roster spot and save 900K is real, if it's between Providence bus rides and Arizona first class flights, I'm guessing Backes would take Arizona (very little real dollars left after July first). The distinction between NTC and NMC is very important there.
Backes does have the kind of injury concerns that could lead a player to LTIRetirement. He's basically had a concussion every year in Boston, some of them bad ones. He got his bell rung in game 4. If it's between Providence and LTIR, i'm guessing he chooses the latter. This isn't a guy that hasn't missed a game in 10 years.

I did edit my post above. These are valid points. The ltir is a no go. The threat of moving him to ahl is a good point. I think that may provoke him to waive.

I don't think the LTIR is a no go. This isn't some "wink wink," type of thing. The guy has one of the most prolific concussion histories in the NHL. He ended last season practically unconscious on the ice.
