Kadri to MIN

Created by: jfalstaff
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: May 5, 2019

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Why do it? I love Kadri, and don't care about the suspensions. He's an effective player, good for 25 goals if not buried, and on an excellent contract for the next several season. MIN needs some quality centers, and Spurgeon is on his last year. Quality contract for slightly more than a rental is good business, hence the salary retention, but maybe Leafs add a sweetener prospect/pick.

Leafs CAN do it because Nylander can drive a line. Even after a diminished season, and lugging around 2 (good) 4th liners, he drove his line well in the playoffs when Kadri was suspended. Get him some wingers who are quick, might have finishing talent, and we're doing okay, I think.

leafs would have to add to the spurgeon deal. a lot. the rest is okay, although I think Kapanen will get shorter term.

We don't want Kadri. We're trying to get younger (as in players 25 and under) and trading for Kadri doesn't accomplish that.

Also, Leafs would have to add a good amount for Spurgeon especially if we're retaining half of his salary.

The only way I would take Kadri is if he was part of a much larger deal. Something like: Spurgeon (1/2 retained), Greenway, and Pateryn for Kadri, Nylander OR Kapanen and Zaitzev.

Don't be so quick to dismiss Kadri out of hand. He's only 28 and would be a good bridge between Koivu/Staal and Kunin/Zegras, plus he's signed for 3 more years, 2 of which should be productive.

The added compensation I would include would be one of those conditional second-rounders, contingent upon Spurgeon signing a re-up. And Toronto are now 4 deep in prospects on either side of the defense, so there's some fertile field there.

I'm thinking you might want to reconsider that Spurgeon/Greenway/Pateryn for Kadri, Kapanen and Zaitsev exchange.

Consider them parameters. Ideally, I would want Nylander, Kapanen, and Zaitzev...

I don't hate Kadri, he just doesn't really fit what Fenton has been trying to do. As @MNBassman mentioned, I'd only want him if he's part of a larger deal and I'd only be OK with moving Spurgeon if we're getting Nylander or Kapanen in return.

I think the problem is that Spurgeon is UFA at the end of the year. So, he's a slightly extended rental. But perhaps something built around Kapanen would make more sense.

That's understandable, but I don't see why Toronto couldn't sign Spurgeon to an extension (negating that issue). Marleau's deal would be off the books when Spurgeons extension would theoretically kick in so there would be space to make it happen, especially with the rising cap.
