Top Heavy Roster Mgmt

Description
Mgmt Strategy

1- Marleau and Zaitsev are staying - either can’t be moved or are worth more to us to keep than in a trade.

2 - Babcock needs a top pair RHD to implement his system. Dubas has recently reaffirmed his commitment to Babcock as the head coach for next season. He needs to give Babs a “fair shot” with the type of roster that fits his coaching style. If it still doesn’t work then the blame is on Babcock. Re-signing Hainsey will put us in the same spot as last year, better to make a trade.

3 - Tavares and Mathews lines need to be stacked, 3rd/4th lines are secondary. We can no longer afford to have top talent throughout the lineup. Goal should be to have two powerhouse lines up front and then support with cheap/value players and projects (like Ennis).

Implementing this strategy leads the moves shown below.

Trades
1.
TOR
  1. Larsson, Adam
  2. 2019 4th round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
Had considered Miller (VGK) or Pesce (CAR), but both teams seem to like these young talented D. I don't think they'd give them up easily, especially CAR after this playoff run.
Added a draft pick to level this out.
EDM
  1. Brown, Connor
  2. Kapanen, Kasperi
Additional Details:
Edmonton gets two forwards who can play with McDavid or Draisaitl and only add 683k of cap space (less than 1 rental at league min).
New GM will want to start a rebuild and they are looking like they might want to move on from Larsson.
2.
TOR
  1. Dal Colle, Michael [RFA Rights]
  2. 2020 2nd round pick (NYI)
Additional Details:
Losing Kadri due to cap constraints, mgmt also looks fed up with him. Get back a former 5th overall pick who hasn't developed as well as others in his draft class (a great project for Babcock) and a pick.
Might seem like a low return for Kadri, but few teams have both the cap space and willingness to take him on.

Supplement the loss of Kadri at 3C by signing a low cost veteran (Brassard in my case) to compete with Gauthier and Brooks for the job. If it doesn't work out, we can burry most of the contract in the minors.
NYI
  1. Kadri, Nazem
Additional Details:
Lou gets another Leaf back, at a reasonable cap it. Helps the islanders at 3C, an upgrade over Filpula.

I believe the cap will work out. With Hyman being on LTIR until Dec/Jan we will save ~1 million in cap space. I am not sure about the cap rules on that though.

I REALLY dont like the kadri move.
Dal colle is a clear bust, the 2nd round pick will take at least 2 years to develop
No,
A defensmen or a top 6 forward and maybe a 1st for a potentiel 60pts guy, and the only guy with grit on the leafs roster

I have a fellow brother in thinking the Leafs have to keep Zaitsev. One his play is OK, even at his cap, and the Leafs have no one to replace him. By trading three starting forwards the Leafs are hoping Bracco, Korshov, Mikheyev, Engall, Timashov or whoever at least three are NHL ready.

I like most of this, but also don’t love the return on kadri, would ether move for a little more proven player, a young forward who could help the bottom six with some upside. Someone like Tyson Jost, although that is probably pushing it, but what about this:
To TOR:
Tyson Jost
2020 5th Rounder

TO COL:
Nazem Kadri
2020 2nd Rounder

Would just like to see someone a little more certain that Dal Colle come back for Kadri.

i think they should keep zaitsev if he is able to improve under the new assistant coaching. there was a report about DJ Smith that said he was the one who developed him into the off the glass and out type of guy and if someone new is able to improve his puck moving ability in the dz it would be huge. he can pretty much do everything else except that. If they could trade him and take nothing that would affect the cap and sign stralman for under 4.5 I would like that more though. A core of rielly, muzzin, dermott, rosen and zaitsev or stralman is pretty good

Fair point, you are right that we need someone more certain than Dal Colle for Kadri. I would like to get a top 6 forward, but due to the cap constraints it would need to be someone earning < 1,000,000 AV. Most likely someone with a year left on their ELC or a project.

I don't know enough about NYI's prospects, would they trade either KIEFFER BELLOWS or NOAH DOBSON? None of their current roster forwards make sense.

I like the suggestion of a COL trade, they could use Kadri, but Jost is their #2C right now, feels like a downgrade for them to go from the younger, cost-controlled Jost to Kadri - even with a pick.

With the Kadri trade I think we should look for a Drouin-Sergachev type deal, a proven player for a less certain but high upside prospect. Conner Timmins (#32 overall in 2017) fits this description and he's a former SSM Greyhound. Maybe Timmins + a pick for Kadri?
