He made great progress last year (highest PPG from a defense in the SHL under 21 years old). I think the Flames did well to sign him as a free asset to hopefully make up for some of the mid round draft picks they've been trading away lately.

I highly doubt anyone here actually watched him play to say anything like "good signing". He had one good year but he's young and hopefully growing. It's a low risk signing. 2 years. About the way it should be done. Something tells me he sits in the AHL those two years and that's that but we'll see. No consistency in those stats and it's at a much easier level of play.

Flames organization states he will be loaned to his current team and in the SHL next season (Press Release). I agree he will likely end up helping more at the AHL level than in the NHL level across the course of this contract, but the signing is like picking up a free third/fourth round pick.

but there are no "free" pick ups. You can only sign so many players and every one you sign takes a spot from someone else. You have to get value in them. There are only so many spare signing spots to go around. But I guess we'll see. Kind of bad news if he's going back to the SHL. I could see if he was 18-19. But he's 21. He needs to play at the AHL level.
