Good points everywhere. As I see the Oilers going into the next season, they've got:
Draisaitl/McDavid/Kassian
????/RNH/????
????/????/Puljujarvi
Gambardella/Khaira/Gagner
Extra: Brodziak/Cave
Klefbom/Larsson
Nurse/????
Sekera/Benning
Extra:????
Koskinen/????
You need to move out Lucic and Russell and maybe Manning. Who would you put in those spots above?
Rather than building from your roster, I would prefer to do something like this:
Krieder/McDavid/Kassian
Panik/Draisaitl/Puljujarvi
Tanev/RNH/Marody
Khaira/Ennis/P. Russell
Extra: Cave
Klefbom/Larsson
Nurse/Stralman
Sekera/Jones
Extra: Bear
Koskinen/McIlhenny
Montoya comes off the books in July, and if Holland walks away from Rattie, Rieder, Chiasson, Petrovich, Gravel, and Stolarz he will have close to $6,900,000 in free cap space. In this scenario, the impossible is possible, and Lucic, Russell, and Gagner are all moved without bringing back substantive salary. Brodziak and Manning can be buried in the AHL, if they can't be moved or aren't "lost" to waivers. With the projected increase in the salary cap, Holland may have a bit more than $24,000,000 to play with. I would move Benning as well, because his value is probably good right now, the extra $1,900,000 in cap space would be nice to have, and he might have to be part of the deal to get Krieder, or a sweetener in a Lucic deal. Might lose some good prospects and draft picks to a Lucic, or Russel, deal as well.
Panik = $4,750,000 (est) x 4
Puljujarvi = $950,000 (est) x 2 - he's coming off his ELC and does not have arbitration rights
Krieder = $4,625,000 x 1
Ennis = $1,100,000 x 2
Gambardella = $875,000 (est) x 2
Khaira = $900,000 (est) x 3
Tanev = $1,650,000 x 2
P. Russell = $800,000 x 2
Stralman = $5,000,000 (est) x 2
McIlhenny = $1,500,000 x 1
I think there is a realistic chance that Holland could sign Panik, and he may be willing to give up the assets necessary to acquire Krieder (assuming he thinks he can re-sign Krieder). I'm not sure Stralman would sign, but he might if Holland gives him a salary increase at this late juncture in his career. I am also not so sure that Ennis and Tanev would not sign elsewhere, for similar money. In any case, this is just an example of how Holland could build a much stronger roster and still have around $3,750,000 in cap space left over. That's enough cap space to accomodate a partially buried Ganger contract, or to bring in help if injuries impact key players during the season. That being said, it is still entirely dependent on moving our $6,000,000 in dead salary, and another $7,150,000 in marginal contracts.
If that roster existed, I would hope the new coach would aim for a reasonably even split of ice time among the top three lines; perhaps something like:
1st line = 19 minutes
2nd line = 17 minutes
3rd line = 17 minutes
4th line = 7 minutes
