Trades
1.
MIN
  1. Kapanen, Kasperi [RFA Rights]
  2. Král, Filip [Reserve List]
  3. 2020 1st round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
The first is conditional upon Spurgeon re-signing long-term in Toronto, which he does. Wild find their scoring right-shot forward and also get futures.
TOR
  1. Spurgeon, Jared ($2,000,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Toronto pays a price but they get their right-handed, top pairing defenseman for a long time. They also don’t have to take on the full cap hit for next year so the remaining RFAs can be signed without issue.
2.
MIN
  1. Faulk, Justin
Additional Details:
With a plethora of young, NHL-ready defensemen, Carolina can afford to trade Faulk. Wild get a solid replacement to Spurgeon.
CAR
  1. Zucker, Jason
Additional Details:
Carolina gets a player they have been scouting for years. Zucker will provide secondary scoring behind Aho and Teravainen.
3.
MIN
  1. 2019 4th round pick (DAL)
  2. 2021 7th round pick (DAL)
DAL
  1. Pateryn, Greg
Additional Details:
Pateryn goes back to Dallas after the departures of Ben Lovejoy and Roman Polak.

As a Toronto fan (assuming Spurgeon gets a fair extension) that's a very fair trade in my eyes and helps both tems.

Spurgeon is going to want too much at 28 that I think will hurt the team long term.

Glad you agree! It will be interesting to see what Dubas does!

What do you think Toronto will do about their right side defense then if anything?

I think they will do a wait and see approach. They have some intriguing pieces and some guys that look like they could be part of, if not the answers. I think they start the year young and inexperienced and evaluate. Otherwise they are likely going to make a short sighted move to make Marleau one year remaining a little easier.

Mixed feelings on this as a Leafs fan. I guess they mostly revolve around how long the extension is for and the AAV. Hard not to be concerned about signing a player approaching 30. Spurgeon is legitimately excellent though. Crazy underappreciated defensively because he someone like 6"5/240 that goes around gooning people between whistles. I wonder if because there's a 1st round pick involved how would you feel about Minnesota retaining some of Spurgeon's cap hit next year to help Toronto as well?

Edit: Either I didn't see it or you edited, 2mil retained is definitely appealing.

I had the salary retained as part of my original deal. Two million Toronto would save would definitely relieve some stress for Kyle Dubas. The Wild won’t be at the cap ceiling next year, assuming it’s going to be $83 million, so they can afford to use cap space as an asset.

Faulk is also a Minnesota boy, so I feel like he would be like that trade.

Yes. We have excess defensemen and could use another top 6 forward. Maybe Zucker and Nino would have good chemistry together here.
