Thoughts on the trades

Description
Rangers miss out/pass on big ticket UFAs and instead take advantage of TOR being cap crunched and take on Marleau's salary for one season to acquire Kapanen, allowing them to resign Marner. This requires shedding some cap space, so Namestnikov, Vesey, Georgiev, Strome, and Pionk are moved.

Nobody is bought out, which frees up future cap space for guys coming off their ELC's when Staal, Smith, Beleskey, Marleau, Shattenkirk, Kreider, and Lundqvist's deals all expire in 1-2 years. I'm unsure what happens with Kreider. I'm sure there is a market for him, but NYR can't trade everyone. I don't see him being moved this offseason. If he does, I imagine he'll net a good prospect and at the very least a 2nd rounder that conditions into a 1st if he's resigned.

Tell me where I missed the mark and/or if you agree with any deals/signings! I left cap space available on purpose as I may have underpaid some guys. There's $4 mil to play with.

Fair enough. Maybe Pionk and a 2nd for Kapanen instead? As we all know, TOR has no leverage and can't resign all those RFAs. Then without Marleau's awful contract on the books, the Rangers go out and get Gus Nyquist or Jeff Skinner assuming Panarin stays in Columbus or goes to FLA. Either way, the future is bright smile

Marleau declines unless NYR agree to buy him out and he remains with the leafs (similar to what happened with Brooks Orpik, except all parties are aware of the following steps). If that could be agreed upon before the trade becomes effective, then it may be able to work. Unsure whether the CBA allows for such a plan though.

The rest seem fair for the most part. I think Georgiev has too small of a sample size to yield a second rounder; more likely a third. And Vesey could yield a third on his own, but I would actually hold onto him, because if he stays at his point rate this year he could be a cheap extension and a solid bottom 6 forward.

This makes a lot of sense for the Rangers, and seems like the most likely to happen as well. Nice job, Marleau won't waive but that trade makes a lot of sense for both sides.

Like the approach...most of these lineups start with the signing of Panarin...Most UFA signings- especially big ticket ufas- are over pays...if even a slight disappointment, the team is handcuffed and the rebuild can be crippled.

The trades seem fair- Leafs might be more interested in B. smith (1/2 sal retained) than Pionk
