It must be nice being a fan of a different team than the Leafs on here. You guys get to post something completely reasonable, Rantanen making under 10, and no one bats an eye. But give Marner under 10 million and everyone loses their minds.

I feel like if it's within a decent standard deviation of like $1-1.5M, it's probably okay for contracts. No one really knows what these guys are going to make, other than the player, the GM, and the agent. For the Leafs AGMs on here, I think more of the disagreement comes from moving Marleau, or somehow circumventing the cap by trading him to the Sens and having them trade Marleau back with 50% salary retention.

All that stuff is just fan fantasy for sure. But one thing that always happens is a Leaf fan has Marner signed for under 10 and 5 people will post something saying he's going to get at least 12.5. Other teams just don't get that level of hate.

Oh, agreed. Leafs ACGMs get skewered.

i don't really see anything like this happening, karlsson has never been the same since his injury in the sens playoff run. He's had 3 goals this season including playoffs. With our depth on defense i don't see that signing. Also i feel like were just starting t scratch the surface on jost, i feel like people forget how young he is. He was rushed into the league and its taking a bit longer, but since his little stint in the ahl hes been solid for us, plus he was a beast in playoffs, put up decent points for 4th line minutes for a series and a half

It's because Leafs fans are overrepresented here, I think. It's generally easier to f*ck with a team and fanbase when you get a lot of responses, either positive and/or negative.

I don't really understand the appeal of trolling people but I know it exists, but its funny that people swear up and down they aren't trolls will lose their minds when someone gives Marner 9.5 million and then say nothing when a Avs fan gives Rantanen 9.5. Its just a funny thing. On a side note, Colorado is going to run the West for the next 5 years. McKinnon is in my opinion the 2nd best player in the NHL, they have building some impressive depth and the Duchene trade was a joke. (in their favour). It is good times to be a Colorado fan.

The main difference between Marner and Rantanen is that it's been made vocally clear by Marner's representatives that he will not be taking any discounts and whatnot, but nothing like that is said about Rantanen. Marner has a direct comparison in his team in Matthews, but Rantanen doesn't have that. If he signs a +$10M contract, he'd be their highest paid player by close to $4M bucks, and that amount is just insane.

That is factually incorrect. At least the Marner part.

Marner's people haven't openly said anything really. Its been circulated that he's looking for Matthews money but the whole discount and whatever hasn't been discussed openly. From what I can gather from the actual facts and not the Sportsnet speculation machine, is that his ask is a salary in the Matthews range. What that means is unclear. I am guessing the ask is 11 million and I bet TO has countered with Kucherov and i fully predict they'll settle around 10-10.5 million for 7 or 8 years. Likely 7.

Direct quote from Marner's agent: “So far they’ve been trying to lowball (Marner),” Ferris told Dave Feschuk of the Toronto Star. “Nobody else is taking a discount. And now you’re asking (Marner) to take one again? It’s nonsense.”

Ferris also went on record to clarify those remarks. He back tracked big time. My guess is Marner didn't like the tone Ferris used in that interview that happened sometime during the season I believe. Will that BS and speculation though I think its all getting blown way out of proportion. The reality is, Marner getting close to 10 million isn't in the slightest a discount. Marner is a top 10 winger likely but he isn't a top 5 winger. The highest paid winger making 10.5 million a season. So taking a discount isn't getting under 10, that would be getting a fair market price. Which is why all this 12.5 million and other nonsense we are hearing is just silly. Marner is worth a lot and he's going to get it.

The leafs want him and he wants to be a Leaf. Thats a fact and they'll figure it out.

Indeed. I myself have posted several times that Marner signs a $10,366,000 for 5 or 6 years. Fits well since Matthews gets $11,634,000 and Tavares just $11M, making it exactly $33M for those main assets.
