Description
I think this team looks infinitely better than this past season.

Spurgeon plays top pairing with Rielly. Draws heavy matchups and assists the PK.

Brown and Zaitsev off the books. Pay a bit to get rid of Zaitsev. Recoup that asset and an extra by trading Brown.

Kruger/Acciari both signed to cheap deals to help the PK. (Admittedly don't know a lot about those two players, just grabbed them to PK. If they are due for contracts higher than what I gave them, insert any cheap 4th liner than can effectly PK instead)

The only way I do the Spurgeon trade is if he comes with an extension. Giving away back to first first would hurt us but if he comes with one then it would be worth. But im not totally apposed to wait for liljigren and Sandin to be in our top four and sign like chairot over the offseason.

Fair enough take. Not having a 1st in consecutive years would suck. For me, I just think I'd rather deal the pick than one of Liljegren/Sandin. And I want to get that top pairing defenseman. I'd make the deal extension or not, then if not definitely try to get one done. Our window is wide open now, and I don't want to wait for our D prospects to develop (on average defensemen take a while to develop. Look at Rielly.) I think our prospect cupboard is full enough to do it. Barely, but full enough.

For the big trade with Minnesota, I'd make the pick a conditional 2nd that turns into a 1st if the Leafs win the cup or Spurgeon signs an extension. A young, good roster player plus a guaranteed 1st seems like a very high price for a 1 year rental. Spurgeon is good, but he's not on an elite level.

The main issue here (which a lot of posts on here seem to have) is that no one seems to get that no team in the league is going to go into a season with such little cap space. Especially with no healthy scratches in case of injury. I'd say the minimum any team goes into the season with is $1M in cap space, but that's with a 23 man roster. Anything less and they won't sustain a competitive team over the full season

Fair enough. I get the window is open and yes I would do it. Maybe have a condition 2nd and if not resigned or not reach points limit then no first

Sure, if that is what the deal ends up as I'm obviously not going to argue. Push comes to shove I'll deal the pick if that's what it takes though. Realistically a condition on an extension does make sense.

Makes sense. With Hyman/Dermott most likely on LTIR to start the season, they will gain a little bit of space over the year to use for call ups. And luckily with the Marlies a taxi away they can keep everyone down there and just emergency recall someone if needed. That was my thought process anyway.

It won't be much of a cap relief with LTIR though, and once they're back they need to be able to take on the full cap hit. Likely have to clear more cap room which is why I don't see them adding a Spurgeon type contract. It's much more possible to see Zaitsev moved for a NHL d-man on a cheap deal and then either a cheap veteran signed or Liljegren given a shot. Cap structure hurts the roster shakeup quite a bit, be interesting to see how Dubas handles it

It won't be much, correct, but it will be enough to deal with injury replacements over the course of the year. Which is all that matters. And my team has them taking on both of the Hyman/Dermott contracts. The only room they'll need (with my above construction) is for game day injury replacement players. In which like they did with Trevor Moore this year, they will call up just before game day, then send down after. Meaning he'll only have his NHL salary on the cap for game days, and not for off days. So they just need enough cap for injury replacements on game days. And I think they would build enough up for that.
