NJD Trouba Myers Lucic Pulijujarvi

Created by: FireShero
Team: 2019-20 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: May 13, 2019
Published: May 14, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Lucic adds grit to the line-up and plays with Hughes like he did with McDavid 2 years ago. Puljujarvi adds great size and speed to Hall and Hischier. Not sure how this looks to EDM fans but get a top 4 right handed d-man that can run the second power-play, and out of Lucic's (mostly) and Manning's contracts.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Trouba and Myers adds size, grit, and defensively responsible d-men and hopefully great compliments to Butcher and Greene now, and Butcher and Smith next year.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Perreault trade would be to any team who would want him at a reduced contract, thought CBJ to fill some of the caps left if both Dzingel and Panarin leave.

Devils need to be the ones getting the picks in the edm, not giving the picks

Myers is the opposite of a defensive responsible. He'll add grit but he is careless with the puck

Also do not give Myers 7

Devils should keep Perreault, he's a pretty good player, tenacious forechecker who's effective anywhere in the lineup.

You're really screwing yourself in the Oilers trade, if you're taking cap dumps you don't give something of value like Vatanen.

My humble opinion, the Edmonton trade is a massive overpay from the devils perspective. Lucic is shot, Puljujärvi is on the verge of being a bust and Manning is just another guy. When healthy Vatanen is better than all three of those guys, to give up him and 2 picks is too much for my taste.

What is the value of Puljujarvi then? Thought it would be higher which is why I added picks on the Devils side. Also I am a Devils fan so haven't watched many Oiler's games, thought Lucic would still be capable of 10-15 minutes a night in a checking role for another 2 years. Manning was another throw in since, in this scenario, he would be the 7th D-man and his cap hit would expire at the end of the season and the Devils aren't up against the cap.

As for Vatanen he is good but he has minor health issues and if Smith makes the opening night roster, along with Carrick and Butcher, it would give the Devils too many offensive D-men. (In my opinion) So I see Vatanen as a expendable and trading him at the beginning of the season would give him more value.

I think Perreault is a decent forward, but with the Devils having Wood, Bratt, Palmieiri, Zacha, Coleman, Noesen, maybe Agostino they had enough depth on the wings.

So it seems that I way overvalued Puljujarvi.

Plus I think if Smith makes the opening roster along with Butcher and Carrick, I think Vatanen would become expendable; since the Devils would have too many offensive D-men, in my opinion.

The ideas was the Hughes and Bratt would provide the speed and passing; Lucic would hopefully protect them and be a net front presence/ battle along the boards

You are grossly underestimating the value of Vatanen. Lucic is negative value, Manning is worth next to nothing, and Puljujarvi is worth about as much as Zacha. Put all that together, and you are pretty much trading Vatanen for nothing. Saying he is expendable because of Carrick, who has proven nothing in this league, is very misguided. I see no reason not to keep Vatanen to start this season. If he does well like in 2018, then keep him and extend him. If the wheels fall off like they did this year, flip him at the deadline for a better return.

Like I mentioned above, I way overvalued Puljujarvi.

Also I should have mentioned that Vatanen is expendable if the Devils get another RHD-man along with Severson or like in this scenario with Trouba and Myers. The Devils defense was terrible last year defensively and I think having Vatanen, Butcher, Carrick, and possibly Smith in the their top 7 would mean more bad defensive play; plus I was only thinking of Carrick playing on the the 3rd pairing.

Winnipeg isn't trading Trouba for an expiring contract. We don't get Trouba without giving up Severson. That said, I would be okay with that.

Ty Smith almost made the opening night roster last season. To predict he doesn't crack the top 7 in 2019-20 is selling him very short. If you listen to Tom Fitzgerald talk about him, he not only expects him to make the roster, but be an impact player as this upcoming season. Also, I could be mistaken, but if he doesn't play in the NHL, I think Smith goes back to Juniors, because he does not meet the AHL age requirements. If this is the case, it will likely stunt his growth, as he was already the best defenseman in that league last season

I think there is a fair chance of him making the opening roster, but, in my opinion, I think it would had helped if he started the year in the AHL instead of just throwing him the deep end.

Also you are correct, if he doesn't make the Devils roster he would have to go back the WHL. I read the rule wrong: if you are 19 and signed to an NHL team you can play in the AHL if you played 4 years in the CHL with a minimum of 25 games played a season******. Smith played for four years in the WHL, but his first year he only played in 2 games.

****** https://olis.leg.state.or.us/liz/2018R1/Downloads/CommitteeMeetingDocument/143414 Here is link for the rule, its on pages 6-7 subsection C

It would be very hard seeing Severson get traded, even if Trouba was coming the other way. The only way I would do that would be if the Devils were able to talk to Trouba beforehand and get him to sign an extension for 7-8 years.

With Butcher, Smith, Greene, and Mueller on the left side of defense means it would be set for this year and the hopefully the foreseeable future. Severson is a great start on the right hand side but Vatanen has a one good and one bad season and the jury is still out on Carrick and Santini. Also after Trouba, Karlsson, and Myers the available RHD-men drop off in quality, and I think if Shero doesn't do something to fix the defense it could hurt their season and chances to resign Hall.

I think Vatanen's body of work shows he would be an above average 2nd pairing Dman. Considering he has only really had 1 bad season in his 6 year career, I would be happy giving him an extension. As for UFA, I only see Karlsson as a long-term solution. Tyler Myers is a big mistake waiting to happen. As far as the Trouba trade is concerned, it would be in WPG's best interest to do a sign-and-trade to maximize return. 2-3 years from now, I would be very happy with a top 4 of:

    Smith-Trouba
    Butcher-Vatanen

    Smith - Trouba great
Butcher - Vatanen is bad in my opinion. I know the NHL is more about speed now, but I am not a fan of two undersized D-man on the same pairing.
