This is a very solid contract for Dallas, with how well he played this is an amazing contract for them, cheap and long-term.

Keep an eye on this one. Underlying numbers look a lot like Nikita zaitzev's. This has the potential to look awful very fast.
It could also be a meh signing (AAV wise) for a top4 dman if his play stays or improves.

Tl;dr keep an eye on it

The biggest difference is that Zaitsev's was signed after one season of NHL play, whereas Lindell has a three season track record.

I will agree that certainly helps (and likely partially accounts for the aav difference), but even career numbers look... Not great. Ill start with Zaitsev's good year on its own so you can see where he was when he signed. The rest will be 1-1 comparisons.
In order:
Zaitsev 2016-17
Zaitsev v Lindell 2018-19
Zaitsev v Lindell 2016-2019
Zaitsev v Lindell PP 2018-19 > just note that Zaitzev played 6 minutes on the PP this year, so the numbers can vary wildly from play
Zaitsev v Lindell PP 2016-19

This is the new reality. Top 4 Defensemen are going to get overpaid. Demand is high and Lindell is solid.

Re: Zaitsev-comparisons:

One thing that has destroyed Zaitsev's numbers has been his deployment. Babcock deploys him like he's a defensive, stay-at-home anchor, when he should be a two-way guy. The year he was used more loosely both ways and got pp time he was solid enough.

Great deal for Dallas. 32 points and best +/- out of their d-men. Even though he had 65% dzone starts. Klingberg had 56% ozone starts and was +6

Little bit of an overpay but doesnt mean hes a bad player. Something between 4-5 million would have been more reasonable.

Klingberg and Heiskenan are very happy right now... Well, Heiskanen is, Klingberg probably not too happy.

The problem with this idea is that Zaitsev IS good defensively when he doesn't have the puck. He makes good decisions in the corners and can make great moves to break up a rush. His biggest problem is decision making WITH the puck. As soon as he gets it he just throws it down the ice. EVERY DAMN TIME.
So yes it is a utilisation problem to some extent and I do believe he will do well in another teams system, but the problem isn't the one you outlined.

Is that 100k for every dive he takes?

In all seriousness, if he can build upon this year it will be a good contract. He's almost as good as Parayko from the left side.

Lindell is really, really bad in a vacuum. He's got strong chemistry with John Klingberg, but with anybody else on the right side, he's completely useless. His stretch from November-December without Klinger was one of the worst months of hockey I've ever seen from any player. Lindell is the very definition of a passenger. Away from Klinger, he's about as good as Roman Polak. Seriously.
