An Uneducated Islanders Fan trying Toronto

Created by: MoreOfAnIslesGuy
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: May 17, 2019
Published: May 17, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This probably isnt going to be the best. I'm not in the loop a lot about Toronto besides the Marner contract situation. Be gentle, lol

Minimum scratches for the sake of cap - call ups possible later on in the season

  1. Kadri, Nazem
  2. 2019 2nd round pick (TOR)
  3. 2019 7th round pick (DAL)
Additional Details:
I honestly don't know the value here. I know some people in Nashville (from what i've seen) are calling Ellis "expendable", but I don't know what Toronto would have to give up along with Kadri for Ellis. Opinions would be awesome!
2.
TOR
  1. 2019 3rd round pick (SJS)
  2. 2020 5th round pick (OTT)
SJS
  1. Marleau, Patrick
Additional Details:
Again, i'm not sure of the value here. Opinions!

TOR
  1. 2019 7th round pick (OTT)
OTT
  1. Zaitsev, Nikita
  2. 2019 3rd round pick (SJS)
  3. 2019 4th round pick (STL)
Additional Details:
Trying to dump Zaitsev (unrealistically assuming he would waive for Ottawa -- if not any team with expendable cap would do.)

Bad term on kap. Brings him right to ufa. The sharks aren’t taking Marleau. If they were willing to do so, and Marleau agreed, the leafs would have to give up a major asset. Not nearly enough for Ellis.

You disgustingly overpaid Marner.
Marleau will cost three times that to dump lol or more
Zaitsev might be harder to move also

Oh and overpaid both Kapanen and Johnsson. Those two are average 3rd line players who benefitted playing with the best 5 on 5 goal scorer in the world last year

My local teams are weak on the right (Anaheim) or both (Los Angeles) sides of the defense, so I don't think Zaitsev is going to be as hard to move as most people. Consider the Ducks: Manson, UFA Korbinian Holzer, RFA Jake Dotchin, and AHLers. This packaging of Zaitsev with mid-round picks in exchange for a 6th or 7th is truly undervaluing him, but I know you've seen lots of team posts with similar exchanges.

Weigh in on the Kadri or Kapanen for Mayfield scenarios.

So, the Leafs get Ellis...and more 1.25m (more cap than Zaitsev) for Kadri, Zaitsev and 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. Rather keep Zaitsev keep the picks and if necessary trade Kadri for prospects/picks.

That Marleau trade is a Leaf dream, but unfortunately reality beckons.

If anything it's high. Marner is an RFA. Therefore he doesn't have the power to command a higher price, unless a team is willing to offer sheet and give up 4 first round picks which no one will do. His salary probably falls between 9.5 and 10 per year, and that's where evolving hockey has put him.

The Marleau deal should be viewed as a salary dump. No way they get anything valuable back in return.

Crazy. I love Marner and what he brings to the Leafs but it feels like being in the Toronto market overhypes a player to the point their expected contract is way above market value. Imagine if Kucherov or Stone were to wear a Leafs jersey. People would say they’re worth 15m per for 8 years.

Bless him, we love Patty out here and will happily take him back for a one day contract so he can retire in teal - but that's the only way we want him back.
