With the first overall pick, who would you choose?

Still Hughes but it's becoming harder to know.

It's a tough choice. Not sure they can really go wrong. Hughes would give them 2 solid centres down the road with Hischier already being a Devil. Kakko would give them an elite line of Hall-Hischier-Kakko.

I really thought the Devils were gonna take Patrick in 2017 and was wrong so while I think they Hughes, once again I could be wrong

I ran this same poll about 3-4 weeks ago and almost everyone said Hughes. It wasn't close. I would take Kakko, and I'm a Devils fan. They've already got a #1 C in Nico, who's been great at the WC, btw. Zacha is still very young. He just turned 22. He's frustrated Devils fans the last 2 seasons, but he's got #2 C potential next season. They have one glaring hole in their Forward group: RW's. Palmieri is pretty much it right now, as I believe Bratt is better off as 2nd line LW. Kakko would immediately jump onto the #1 line of Hall-Nico-Kakko.

I know it's a very difficult choice, but 3-4 months prior to the 2017 Draft, Nolan Patrick was the undisputed #1 Overall pick. Nico overtook him and now look how much quicker Nico has developed. Obviously there are many factors to consider here (Hughes is a Center and he's younger), but I'm amazed by Kakko's goal scoring ability...and that's the idea of the game...put the puck in the net.

Shero had hinted that it was actually a 3 player race in 2017 in a post draft interview. I'm assuming he was considering Miro as the 3rd player. I think Nico was the best choice, but I'm sure PHI would love to have taken Miro over Patrick at #2.

The fact that this vote is 4-4 is purely because of recency bias.

Kakko is dominant in a few games at the world championships, and Jack Hughes is not, and us non-experts change our entire opinions over a small sample size/recent tournament. It's called recency bias.

yeah but if you were paying attention Kakko was dominant all year in a men’s league while Hughes was dominant in a league of 16/17 year olds

Recency bias is real for pro scouts and gm's too! Every single draft features several players who rise/fall based on recent play, or recent injuries, or whatever. NJD's are taking Hughes. No doubt.

Hughes is younger. He's a safer play at #1. I love Kakko and the Devils are in desperate need of a scoring Winger, but Hughes is already an elite playmaker and his potential is great. He'll make Taylor Hall even better.
