Two Trades - MIN amp CGY

Created by: TML_GM
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: May 21, 2019
Published: May 21, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
MIN gets a C and a RW to improve their top 6. Both with term and control. TOR gets LW depth that they lack and a short term RHD solution with retention and the possibility to resign.

CGY gets a some added wing depth, the younger player and saves a little cap by off loading a C that likely ends up as their 4C while making over 3M. TOR get a 3C replacement for KAdri (a downgrade offensively) but a C that can actually kill penalties and still chip in on offense.

***Updated to complete the roster***
Still only 1 scratch, but doable. Can run with 7D if injuries occur during the regular season or use emergency call-ups from the Marlies when at home.

Leafs likely gain some cap cushion as well due to Hyman being on LTIR to start the season.

As you suggest this type of trade might be the way to do it for the Leafs and Minni. Leafs are still short two roster spots. Don't do the Calgary would save 1m...and Nylander goes to centre. and one of Korshov. Marchment, Timashov is the other winger.

Greenway can also play centre if you dont do the flames trade.

Stacks the top 2 lines which I like a little more as you leave nylander with matthews. Role with Marleau/Greenway/Bracco, and then Brown/Gauthier/Moore. Definitely taking a hit up front with the Kadri trade, but worth it for spurgeon.

Well with the roster you suggest there is roster of 21, and just 437,000, hence my suggestion of no doing the Ryan trade. Then you go 1.437m for the two spots. Has Greenway ever played centre at the pro level?

I don't imagine the Wild retain that much salary without more coming their way... You'd be lucky getting $1 Million retained in this deal, given how highly regarded Greenway is on their team. You'd have to add a decent prospect or a 2nd round pick to convince them to retain the maximum salary allowed.

Even though Ryan is much older than Brown he’s much better. Ryan is also the Flames #3C

Unless CGY is in a severe cap crunch, I don't see them offloading Ryan at all. Was one of their very best players after the All-Star break and he's one of Bill Peters favorite guys.

In my opinion trading Spurgeon for Kadri doesn't make sense for the Wild. If they're trading Spurgeon, they need to get back a young RW. Kadri would potentially hinder potential development of the younger centers. Ek did a nice job for them down the stretch playing 2C minutes. I do like trading Greenway for Kapanen and think it helps both teams.

Sorry, was in a rush and published before completing. Obviously more tweaking is required. Though Babcock would probably love having only Freddie.

Yes, I rushed it and published before I was complete. While I don't hate Nylander at 3C, I think that handcuffs Matthews a bit too much as far as talent to play with. Really depends on how big a step players like Bracco or Greenway can make if paired with him. Similar to how Kapanen and Johnsson did this year.

I would also really like a 3C that can actually be used effectively on the PK.

Brown isn't that much worse and still has some untapped offensive potential. I realize Ryan may be the current 3C, but with Jankowski there pushing, I don't know how long that lasts. All come down to Calgary's cap situation I suppose. I was looking for a team with enouch center depth that might consider a swap like this, but I may look somewhere is if this is Calgary's view of Ryan.

How much centre has Greenway played? That was news to me. A big 3C is certainly interesting, though I would prefer a natural centre who can PK well in that slot.

Personally I prefer the more stacked lines. The "big advantage" the Leafs expected to have with their top 9 this year didn't really play out. Plus I would like to try and get more minutes for Tavares/Matthews and less for Marleau on a consistent basis.

i didnt do the ryan trade either. which is why i have brown in the proposed lines i tossed out. I'm not the one that created this team.

Greenway has not played centre in the nhl, but did all through college.

played C all in college, nothing at the NHL level, but i dont think anyone can see a reason he cant. Yes his FO% is terrible, but it's a pretty small sample size and would improve with more opportunities.
