Yep. They need cap space not more centres.

What team would let their best young left wing walk for a realistic five year contract?

Offersheets do not exist until proven otherwise.
That being said Johnsson is the most likely target

That is not a realistic 5 year contract. 7@4.5 is would be a realistic version of that (Arvidsson, Dvorak etc)

Exactly, Karlsson, Stastny, Eakin, & Haula. are one too many for a top three at center and they have no room to bring up Glass.

If the Leafs want Miller it will cost at least a 2nd and a prospect.

AJ is more important than Kadri and Kappy cause Leafs lack depth on the left side.

    Kapanen immediately fires his agent!!

Johnsson gets $4.75MM and KK gets $3.25MM? Yikes!

Edmonton passes. A 3rd round pick pick seems to be about the "fair value" on this site for Brown. So a 2nd -4th might be the range. That means Edmonton is trading Jujar for a 5th round pick. Not bloody likely. They short competent forwards to begin with. Trading one for half of a magic bean doesnt seem like a good move. Chiarelli is gone.

You present that with your fingers crossed. Arvidsson was a couple of years ago and Dvorak scored less than both.
There is value for the Leafs anywhere in the 4.5-5M range with term.

    How soon they forget:
Ryan O'Reilly (Calgary), Shea Weber (Philly), Niklas Hjalmarsson (SJS), David Backes (Vancouver), and of course the most famous of all: Dustin Penner with the Oilers.

Or Fedorov's 25M in 3 months with Carolina and Detroit having to match.

Johnsson has 1 year of 40 points. He'd be getting something along those lines (if the Leafs could afford it).
He will get a shorter deal (which is closer to 4@3.25)

How soon do you forget how long ago those where? They don't happen often is the point, and as such they are not a threat to be taken seriously until one materialises.

A team that is literally bent over and their hands wrapped around their ankles when it comes to the cap. I’m not saying they wouldn’t match but an offer sheet would be a nightmare for the Leafs. Best case scenario in my opinion is that they sign him to a one year deal. That way his cap hit is low which gives the Leafs more room to sign other RFAs. When the one year is up Marleau’s contract will be gone and that money can be used to sign him to a long term contract. Yes, there’s a huge risk he will have a blowout season and command more money again, but that’s the situation the Leafs are in,

It took him 18 games to get up to speed and he scored at a 60 point pace the rest of the year. If he signs as cheap as you think, Dubas deserves a big pat on the back.

Don’t think the numbers will be like that, but AJ will be definitely get paid more than Kapanen. That’s because AJ has arbitration rights and Kapanen does not.

Kapanen you can pull off a one or two year deal with, not Johnsson. His season was no fluke and now is the time to get him with some term.
The Leafs won't have a problem clearing cap space, contrary to popular belief.

They are taking on more cap space in that deal and Miller is worth more then Kadri.

In February. Offering Brown and Hyman numbers is a hilarious Leaf lowball.

Might wanna take a look at Hyman again. He makes much less and does a lot of work, while scoring 41 points and 20 goals. Giving him the Hyman deal + inflation + a bit is pretty much spot on (which is 4@2.75-3.25)

I did. 4 years and 9M after a 10 goal, 28 point season. Hyman is a worker but when your linemates are putting up 70 points apiece at even strength to your 40...it's pretty clear he is out of place. Love those empty netters.

Hence the + a bit part.
If Hyman is worth 4@2.25, saying Johnsson is worth 4@3.25 isn't a stretch. I mean look at Sam Reinhart for another comparable. I wouldn't even put the possibility of him getting an AAV that starts with a 2 out of the question depending on how negotiations go

    Quote:

The offer sheet isn’t just a chance to get a player it’s a weapon to use against your opposing GM who’s team is against the cap in order to weaken them or pry other players loose. Analytics are now now driving the game and the old school GM’s that won’t use it are going the way of Brian Burke being talking blow hards on TV.

That was my point of including Fedorov’s offer sheet—it was a weapon even back then by the Canes owner against his minor hockey league rival (Detroit’s owner). Now GM not owners are using it. They know it will morph during the next CBA, but the smart ones will take advantage of it the next couple years until it does.
