I don't get why anyone has an issue with this signing.

The only issue I have is if this signing comes at the expense of signing Hayden Hawkey.

Next season will be 19 years old playing in the QMJHL. Great signing for such a great prospect. Potential future in net for the Oilers down the road.

.878 , .903, .902 in his 3 years in the QMJHL.

Can't say he's looking that great right now. Hopefully he can prove me wrong next year.

Matt Murray's 3 years in the OHL before the Penguins signed him: .887 in 28 GP, .876 in 36 GP, .894 in 53 GP.

Goalie numbers in major-junior don't 100% tell the whole story.

Why would it. Edmonton only has 37.50 contracts. The kid is 18, he won't be in the AHL for another 2 years which means he most likely isn't going to be on edmonton's roster.
Hawkey is 24, if he signs it will have no effect.
Hawkey is actually a 4 year college player. who had a career year last year. My guess is if he's not signed soon he'll be a FA. But that has nothing to do with this kid.

I know it has nothing to do with a spot on the 50, I'm just thinking that Holland likely doesn't want an overabundance of goalies. And you make it sound as if this season was a one-off for Hawkey, but it wasn't:

2016-17: 2.19 / .913
2017-18: 2.04 / .919
2018-19: 1.88 / .921

Seems to be a quality prospect, hopefully they find room for him what with Starrett, Wells and Skinner fighting for AHL time already. Some are already speculating that Wells gets loaned to another AHL team in order to get enough playing time, Holland might think that Hawkey just further complicates things - especially with this QMJHL prospect on his way.

Edmonton already has 4 goalies signed beyond this season and that doesn't include a backup goalie (Unless Rodrigue, Skinner, Wells are the backup next year). There really isn't room for Hawkey to play

I did not say it was a one off. I said he had a career year, which he did, and is a real possibility to be a college free agent. In other words, he's a hot prospect if he goes FA.
