Trades
1.
VGK
  1. Johnsson, Andreas
Additional Details:
Colin Miller is a great puck mover, right handed shot, and can play the 2nd unit power play to replace Gardiner. I also think his style of play would be a great compliment to Rielly. Will likely have to pay a premium. Ideally I would like to have Connor Brown in this trade but more realistically they would probably want Johnsson to fill in their third line. Miller is also signed for a couple years.

SIDE NOTE: When Marleau comes off the books in 2020, you could use the cap space to resign Muzzin. Rielly, Miller, Manson and Muzzin all signed for a couple years. Not bad.
2.
TOR
  1. 2019 3rd round pick (PIT)
OTT
  1. Zaitsev, Nikita
Additional Details:
Primary purpose of this trade is to get him off the books. Manson and Muzzin are the shutdown pair now and Zaitsev's salary is ridiculous. Would have to go to a team likely with lots of cap space. Would be great if you could get a depth D or 4th line forward but more realistically, the team taking him is just taking him for cap relief so will likely only give a draft pick for him.
3.
TOR
  1. 2021 7th round pick (ANA)
ANA
  1. 2021 7th round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
NOT A TRADE JUST A NOTE!!!

Brandon Pirri is a guy from Toronto who I think given the opportunity, could take a hometown discount to play in his hometown. Sign him to a short-term deal in case he doesn't work out but I think he has lots of offensive upside and could be a good guy to replace Johnsson. Definitely a gamble but I think its worth it.
4.
ANA
  1. Nylander, William
Additional Details:
A lot of contingencies on this trade. I could see them wanting a guy like Nylander to jumpstart a rebuild. Might have to do something crazy like buyout Kesler or Perry to get the cap space. Manson would come at a premium so might be something similar to the Hall for Larsson deal.
5.
TOR
  1. Faksa, Radek
  2. 2019 5th round pick (DAL)
DAL
  1. Kadri, Nazem
Additional Details:
Another trade that would be nice but I don't know if it will happen. Dallas might be tempted since Kadri is signed for a couple years and Faksa is expiring. If Toronto could resign Faksa to an extension equal to or lesser than Kadris ($4500000 per year) I think Toronto gets a steal.

The extra cap space could be used to extend another free agent.

You wouldnt, NHL GMs would trade for him. There is market for him. Apparently Jack Johnson would be traded who is like thousand levels worse than worst part of the Leafs blue line.

You wrong no market for zaitsev and ducks can’t trade Manson. Look at their roster he is only RHD.

Not saying they would or should trade Manson.

And there IS market for Zaitsev. There was market for Jack Johnson and Karl Alzner and they are by lightyears worse players.

This is really bad...

- Marner is getting above 10 for 7/8yr deal, not 4.
- Nylander alone would cost Manson+
- Kadri would cost Faksa+
- Zaitsev would not get 3rd back. Maybe 5th is more likely.

Love all the moves except the Kadri one, he obviously has made major mistakes the past two years in the playoffs but is still a very important part of the lineup. Slight overpay For Manson, but the ducks will need an extra incentive to move him now that Montour is gone. Miller has been a difficult guy to decide a price for, I believe that johnsson straight up is a fair deal (Could just be a biased leafs fan tho) have seen a wide variety of prices for him but I believe that Vegas would want a roster play in return. Zaitsev for a 3rd is also slightly high but trading Z for any kind of return that doesn’t effect the cap is a win.

Serious question. Why is Marner worth more than Kucherov?

Yeah those players signed contracts. Dump contracts in free agency. They didn’t have to give up anything for them. And everyone was shaking their heads when they signed. He has negative value in trade. No one will want contract and will need to give up good pick or prospect for team to take him. Especially since leafs are in cap hell and no team is just going give pick to help leafs. When u could sign player like jordie Benn for half price and years and will be better player.

Kucherov played in Tampa no state tax. And living in Florida sun shine state versus crazy hockey market and cold Toronto.

Jack Johnson is being talked about in trade conversations and he was traded before and on worse deal than he is now if I remember correctly. Sooo you are thinking that Jordie Benn is better player than Nikita Zaitsev?

Did any leaf take discount ever to play for them. Nylander no, Mathews no, Taveras no, marleau no. And goes on. He will cost more and cap will go up more.

Financially speaking he is not with that deal but he is nowhere near Kucherov playwise imo. His numbers were boosted by playing with one of the best centermen in the world. Kucherov played with few guys over this year and produced at league leading level throughout the year. He is above 9mil a year guy for sure for what he brings but no more imo.

The Las Vegas trade is right on value but it doesn't make much economic sense for the Golden Knights. Las Vegas is in even worse cap trouble than we are and this is essentially a lateral move financially unless Johnsson is willing to take far less than we all think he wants. If Las Vegas does trade Miller, I suspect it will be to a team which has extra first-round picks, like the Rangers.

Someone needs to be a fan of massively overpaying for players.

Yes, I watch a lot of Montreal and leaf games and I can tell you Benn is better. He is older but for next two years he will produce at same rate and plays just as well and defensive zone. But will cost less then half. He was just an example. You could get similar player for half the cost. The reason leafs signed that deal because his rookie year he was getting you 30+ points.

I based the Nylander trade on previous similar deals. Hamonic cost the Flames a first and 2 seconds. Hall went to New Jersey for Larsson. Nylander is by no means a Taylor Hall and I think Manson is better than Larsson. Leafs would definitely have to overpay but yeah maybe the 1st is a bit too much.

Marner I would love to sign to 7/8 but I don't know if he would do it considering he wants Matthews money and Matthews signed a bridge deal.

I also think Faksa is a lot more valuable to the Stars than people think.

I understand the state tax issue when it comes to UFAs considering potential teams to sign with, but I don't know that you can use that as a negotiation point for an RFA that doesn't have a choice over where he signs. RFA deals are all about comparable players. Rantanen and Kucherov are probably the most relevant comparable players right now. We know what Kucherov got, I'll be curious to see what Rantanen gets. If Rantanen signs for under $10M, I don't see why Marner should get more than that.

Basing trades on two trades that look like massive flops is probably not the best way to go about things.

no way Vegas and OTT do those deals, Vegas needs to shed cap not add more and Zeitsev is a cap dump for 30 teams in NHL and will cost TOR ALOT to get rid of him because he still have lots of term on his contract.

So in order to get the Miller, the Leafs trade Zaitsev and Johnsson. The Leafs would be better off keeping Zaitsev and getting assests back in a trade for Johnsson. Of course if subscribe to theory that any RHD in the league is better than Zaitsev. Don't know why folks think Zaitsev is so bad Plays big minutes for a good tea, Plays heavy PK minutes. Didn't play the PP because Marner took his spot. Played with Gardiner most of the season which is a concern for any Gardiner defence partner.

That is just not true when talking about a RFA of marner caliber. Look wat happened to Nylander. Do you want that to happen to marner. And state taxes matters in contract if you are rfa or UFA. It doesn’t matter. You will be getting more money in your pocket.
