Two "The Athletic" Beat reporters from PIT and MIN. The trade is ready to go, pending Phil waiving his L-NTC. I added Jarry and the retention on Rask.

Thats disgusting. Kessel outproduces everyone in that deal combined and by a large margin too.

Not a done deal yet, only thing holding it up is Kessel since he has to waive. Apparently the deal has been on the table for a few days...

Pittsburgh automatically wins since they dump the Johnson contract but Kessel isn't waiving for Minnesota

I don't think it's Fenton pushing the trade... This has Craig Leipold's impatience written all over it. Every one of Fenton's trades (good or bad) had us moving older guys for younger guys and this would be the exact opposite. Leipold wants to win a cup ASAP and he has 0 patience to build a team through the draft.

Interesting... I like Kessel a lot but this trade just doesn't make sense to me for the Wild. If we hadn't traded Nino, Coyle, and Granlund, then I could see it but now it seems we are in rebuild-mode.

If he does, I hope Minnesota fans get together and send him a fruit basket.

So instead of a 27-year-old Jason Zucker signed at $5.5 through 2023, the Wild get a 31-year-old Phil Kessel signed at $6.8 through 2022. I guess the belief is that Seattle will take the Johnson contract (through 2023!) off your hands.

The only way this makes any sense for Minnesota is if Pittsburgh's first-round pick is involved.

Exactly. Even if we added Kessel we aren't magically a team primed for a deep cup run. We need to rebuild, not add 31 year old 90p wingers.

Kessel is the better player in this scenario, so MIN will give up pick(s).

Speaking of Edmonton, I wonder how soon certain Western Conference GM's are going to be calling Fenton about that hole on LW and Loui Eriksson or Milan Lucic . . .

I starting to think this trade was “leaked” to face the court of public approval...at least I hope that’s the case since everyone with 1/2 a brain hates this idea!

And Jack Johnson is by far the worst, so Pittsburgh will give up pick(s).

Interesting how even the prospect of dumping Jack Johnson doesn't have Pittsburgh fans happy.

Probably because they would get stuck with Rask...

Rask actually fits in nicely as their 3C, allowing them to trade Bjugstad and keep Rust (whom they might otherwise have to trade in order to get below the cap). Rask isn't actually a minus, as Johnson is. Jack Johnson is an older, slower version of Nikita Zaitsev, and with less defensive skill. You've seen all those Toronto team constructions where Zaitsev is traded somewhere for a fourth-round pick, but a Maple Leafs third goes with him? Johnson is worse.
