Nashville to me felt like the most compatible trade partner with Pittsburgh for Kessel, both teams have history of doing 1 for 1 trades and both are rumoured to be shopping their respective players.

Montreal is a team I think would be willing to take a chance on Maata and are in a position where they can part with a 3rd to take that chance.

Attaching their 1st with Gudbranson for Ottawa to move up about 20 spots into the first round seems like a solid incentive for Ottawa to take on Gudbranson for the year.

Schultz was a hard one to determine a trade partner for. I considered Vancouver, then Anaheim but neither felt right. So I settled on Dallas who would also like to move on from Nichuskin. Pair him with Malkin it could light a fire under him. But capwise, Schultz seemed easiest to trade given he has 1 year left compared to Johnson.

Maatta for a third seems really fair to me, I'd love MTL to do a move like that.

Reminds me of the Bealieau trade to Buffalo few years ago for a 3rd. Both former 1st rounders coming off a bad year in need of a change. Only thing Maata has over him is 2 rings which could improve his trade value potentially.

I'd even be okay with MTL paying up to one of their 2nds for Maata but with Kulak and Mete already this would only happen if MB decides not to make a play for a bigger name on the left side this offseason.

Oh yeah also meant to comment on the Kessel/Subban swap. I had this thought too, but a 1 for 1 doesn't check out because Kessel is 2.2 million cheaper so the Preds would have to add assets or take a cap dump from the Pens to make this work.

DAL takes that trade so fast you didn't even notice it.

The Penguins could definitely get a lot more for Schultz. Also, I wouldn't make that Ottawa deal. I really want to keep some type of 1st round pick this year. Ive seen that Subban/Kessel deal proposed but I would prefer to get younger; thats just me. I do think MTL would take on Maatta and a 3rd or maybe even a 2nd seems to be around his value.

Pittsburgh won't have to "pay" to move Gudbranson, especially to AHL Ottawa.

I'd imagine they would. I think Pittsburgh taking a chance on Nichuskin could be low risk, high reward kinda move if he were to find chemistry with Malkin. Depends on their willingness to move salary. With Subban coming in through this situation, they need to shed salary and Schultz is easier to trade than Johnson.

Like I said, found it tricky to think of a mock trade involving Schultz, I'd love to see other suggestions.

Why wouldn't they? Bailing a team out of a cap crunch requires incentives. Arizona has been doing it for years.

Couple of days ago I thought of a 3-way trade between Pens, Wild and Leafs. Basically it went like this:

Pittsburgh Penguins
Jason Zucker
Nic Petan

Minnesota Wild
Kasperi Kapanen
Bryan Rust
2019 2nd round pick (TOR)
2020 3rd round pick (PIT)

Toronto Maple Leafs
Justin Schultz (50% salary retained by Wild)
Pontus Åberg

Pens save money and gets a good winger for Malkin. MIN gets some right handed assets that are relatively young for their retooling process and TOR receives a nice RHD they need. I'd imagine it's a win-win for all of them.

Because they aren't in that bad a spot, he's not a bad player, and Ottawa is in a horrible roster spot with ownership no one wants to play for. Getting a guy with term is a huge need for them.
