Sens - Seattle Expxansion Draft Project

Created by: YvanF
Team: 2019-20 Ottawa Senators
Initial Creation Date: May 21, 2019
Published: May 24, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This is a little side project I'm working on:
The objective is to build for the future. Setting up Ottawa to be able to hopefully contend in 2021-22 all while surviving the Expansion draft, a potential lockout, and really, any more drama that could surface from having Melnyk as an owner. LOL

Seattle Expansion Draft:
Exempt list:
Brannstrom
Formenton
Norris
Bernard-Docker
Daccord
...and any rookies signed or drafted from now on.

Protection Strategies: At this point would opt 7F/3D/1G format.
Forwards I would protect:
1) Tkatchuk
2) White
3) Batherson
4) Brown
5) Balcers (?)
6) Chlapik (?)
7) Tierney (?) or Abramov (?) or Duclair(?)
(?) = undecided as still too early too tell but possible contenders

Defensemen I would protect:
1) Chabot
2) Wolanin (?)
3) Lajoie (?)

Goalies to be protected:
Can only protect one, and will be a 2021 decision. Whomever is the #1 goalie at the time (ie: whoever progresses best between Hogberg, Gustavsson, Daccord.

So basically you have 3 slots open at forward group, and 1 to 2 slots open at defence.
That is a healthy number of "open" slots and I feel comfortable with this flexibility moving towards the Expansion draft.

2019 Draft: I truly believe that if your realistic window to hopefully contend is 21-22, then you need to have good prospects in the pipeline sooner than later. The sens are picking @ 19th this year. I'd like to see them either move up to between 6 to 14 by packaging a their 19th + a pick or player OR keep your 19th and trade other assets to get as close to 8th to 12th.

After the draft, I would spend the 2019 offseason (and likely 2019-20 season) canvassing teams that wish to offload capspace for the 2019-20-21 seasons.

The below trade scenarios are potential players/teams that could be a fit for Ottawa. Contracts must be 2-3 years or less remaining. Cap hit is greater than real money paid (Melnyk Clause).

This aGM is to request the CapFriendly community to assist me in ascertaining trade values for cap dumps.

Suggestiosn and feedback are welcome.

Thanks

Like the concept, theory, but don’t have much to add, possibly start collect 2021 2nd rounders to get best possible protected list, and or also like you said anybody entering elc this upcoming season

no way that EDM deals go through. Not enough going back to warrant moving up 11 spots

Thanks for the input. Not sure if you read my description, but please advise on what would be a fair asking price. Its the whole point of this thread. LOL

If you're Ottawa, you do not bail out Toronto from the Marleau contract without at least a 2nd or Jeremy Bracco attached to the contract. You don't bail out division rivals that easily. Marleau would also have to approve of the deal for starters and I highly doubt he waives his nmc to go to Ottawa.

I'd say the same thing about the Tampa one. Callahan would be more inclined to waive his NMC because he probably just wants to play to prove his worth to save his career; but again, you don't take that contract on unless you get Taylor Raddysh, Alexander Volkov or at least a 2nd. IMO

Interesting thread concept though. I like it.

He's exempt. No need to protect.

Yes exactly, all about the best protection list possible and also draft picks and exempt players, that could possibly turn into best protection list possible. And cap space for a healthy haul of ufas in summer of 21

I agree. VERY little chances of Callahan or Marleau waiving their NMC/NTC. Mainly looking for suggestions for trading partners who are in desperate need for cap relief, and players who "could" be shipped (ie: no NMC or NTC's).

I'm thinking TB, Tor and Oil fit the bill. Maybe Detroit. But players need agree. But I'm having fun thinking of plausible scenarios. Realistic scenarios are very hard to find.

Some of the ones that come to mind that fit your profile (No NMC, less than 3 years):
Cody Eakin, Vegas (3.85 Mil, 1 Year)
Erik Gudbranson, Pittsburgh (4 Mil, 2 Years)
James Neal, Calgary (5.75 Mil, 4 Years) Buy out the last year if he never picks up his play
Victor Rask, Minnesota (4 Mil, 3 Years)
Justin Braun, San Jose (3.8 Mil, 1 Year)
Sam Gagner, Edmonton (3.15 Mil, 1 Year)
Nick Bonino, Nashville (4.1 Mil, 2 Years)
Craig Smith, Nashville (4.25 Mil, 1 Year)

LOL. Great minds think alike. Both of us see a possible interest on both sides for the Manning and Russel move.
I also think Ottawa could be a good trade partner for the Oil getting rid of Lucic (especially if they can figure out a way to retain some salary and ship him elsewhere for more futures.
With regards to your specific trade you referenced, having watched ALOT of Boedker and Smith, I just don't think they have any value and WOUDLN'T touch them if I were Edmonton.
The Ryan for Lucic swap, albeit interesting.... I'm not convinced is plausible nor is there enough of an incentive on either sides. I see it as a lose lose.

The expansion draft is 3 years away. It's not till june 2021.
This is the mot futile waste of time to worry about.
On top of it, the most likely situation is that you dump a contract onto seattle for a draft pick.
