Leafs rumors

Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: May 25, 2019
Published: May 25, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
From what I have read online (rumor mills and opinion blogs), the Leafs have been tied to Vegas dman Collin Miller, Adam Larsson (dating back to this past years trade deadline, and getting a "heavier" forward group.

In this heavier forward discussion is Pierre Engvall (who has been playing center) and Mason Marchment who are with the Marlies. They would provide cheap bottom 6 players but may or may not be NHL ready. On the free agent market is Michael Ferland who the Canes do not expect to resign.

Also, the Leafs have stated that Kadri is more likely to be traded than Nylander.

When Dermott returns, the team will have to evaluate Rosen and Liljigren to see who should stay up and who should go back to the Marlies (I would say that Liljegren probably needs another year in the minors).
When Hyman returns the leafs will need to evaluate who is doing the least on the 4th line (probably Gauthier) and scratch him. Hyman would slot into the 2nd line LW, Moore would take the 3rd line LW and Marleau would drop to the 4th line at either any position. If he is really showing his age he may be the one to be scratched.

I'm just guessing that Oilers fans won't like this.

Leafs can get more in separate deal that the Dallas trade. In effect its Larsson for Zaitsev, Brown and Bracco. To me it too much for Leafs give up. Just keep Zaitsev, trade Brown and Kapanen for assets (for cap space reasons) and Bracco becomes a Leaf. Honda and Liljegren top six duty?...can't see that next season.

The key element in this 22-man, skin-of-the-teeth-cap-compliant roster is the Marleau machination. If that isn't available, this whole scheme falls apart.

Why sign Ferland (who might not accept that figure) when we could re-sign Andreas Johnsson for the same money? Johnsson isn't necessary for the Dallas trade because surely Dallas would accept Kadri and two thirds for Hints and Honka no matter how well the former showed in the recent playoffs.

I don't think that offer for Larsson is nearly enough.

Do yourself a favor and quit reading rumor mills and blog posts. None of those writers are plugged into the team, agents, nor players (no matter what they say in their posts) and it's all just speculation. Anybody can say "Miller from Vegas is somebody the Leafs should pursue", but that doesn't mean Dubas feels the same way.

Yeah, there's no way the league lets you make that Arizona trade.

I'm pretty sure it's actually illegal in the CBA.

I think they are also trying to close the "we will trade a guy to you, you buy him out and then you can resign him" loophole as well.

Why would Wings take on Zaitsev for a 4th round pick. We have enough of overpaid defensemen. We need to clear the back end to give some kids a chance.

While they may want to close that loophole it is currently something that is part of the CBA.

While the league may not like it there is nothing they can do to stop it. Colorado and Washington did that last year with Orpik.

TOR would be smart to try this with any team willing. The Marleau contract can’t be bought out to save cap space because it’s a +35 contract. However, for a team that doesn’t want to spend actual cash it’s a perfect option to reach the cap floor and gain an asset.
