Why would they trade the 2nd overall for a former 2nd overall. Also there is the fact that he struggled throughout the entire year

Honestly that's not even crazy, anything else just seems like it'd be a Joe Thorton 2.0 trade. I'd want at least a Duchene (with a better piece then Hammond)trade kind of return for Laine.

cause Kakko and Hughes are unproven. WPG would want someone with a high ceiling and who is cost controlled. the 2nd overall pick would give them exactly that

Wpg wouldn’t need to dump cap if they didn’t have to pay laine, another point would be that the jets would want all the players or picks coming back exempt from expansion draft or there value would lessen

If it doesn’t make sense for wpg, why do it, especially with the thought that laine may sign longterm in wpg, where some guys you just know that they are on the first plane out as soon as they are eligible.

Exactly and that's also why the 'trade Ehlers discussion is very wrong imo. A young, skilled player you drafted signed long term with your small market team that free agents and players with no trade/movement clauses don't want to play for so Ehlers commitment shouldn't just be tossed aside for some cap space imo.
I mean there's fans out there that want to trade Ehlers(signed to stay long term) for surplus cap space so they can overpay Trouba(requested a trade, wants out) to stay, truly delusional thinking.

I think ehlers part of the answer, and also helps get laine to put pen to paper, I may overstate there friendship, but could be a key dynamic in the build, most of these builds on here, need to relax, nothing too drastic is coming, it maybe a record setting offseason for news, but that could mean 4/5 headlines instead of 2/3. The only way I would think of moving ehlers would be for a team controlled Center some what established and some major upside, but they don’t grow on trees.
