If you pay him you have to move Nylander

Created by: nchest
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs

Description
Notice I have a 23 man roster unlike a lot of the posts on here.

Would love to keep Nylander to see if he can bounce back, but if Marner gets paid, he might have to go.

Marleau isn't going to go anywhere but will be on the 4th line. Sandin and Liljegren could be up during the year, but not to start the year. Signed Hainsey for under $2m but it could be some other experience RD for one year.

Sparks is sent to the minors. If worried he might be claimed, then traded for a late pick. I signed Kinkaid, but maybe they bring Curtis Mac back. They need someone that can take some of the workload off of Anderson and also win some games. Sparks bad play last year likely cost them home ice in the first round.

Trades
1.
TOR
  1. 2020 3rd round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
Likely get a 3rd rounder at best or a waiver exempt prospect
2.
CAR
  1. Nylander, William
  2. 2020 2nd round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
This was a one for one trade probably at the beginning of last year but not any more. Toronto likely has to add more then a 2nd round pick now but it won't be a roster player, so just put the 2nd to show the Leafs need Nylander + to get Pesce if Carolina is stupid enough to trade.
3.
TOR
  1. 2019 5th round pick (ANA)
Additional Details:
The Ducks really only have Manson on the right side right now. It might not be them but someone will take Z plus a pick for a worst pick.
ANA
  1. Zaitsev, Nikita
  2. 2019 3rd round pick (TOR)

Nothing makes sense about trading player on a good contract to overpay 2 mil for the other guy.

It is not a one for one trade if you read my comments. Toronto has to add to get Pesce but nothing from the roster, picks and prospects. Carolina has depth at RD and needs offence. The Leafs have depth on offence and RW but need defence. This might not be the exact trade but the key pieces.

Toronto is not adding to get Pesce. Also my point was about trading Nylander to make place for that holy overpayment of a contract for Marner.

He is talking about trading nylander to overpay marner.

If marner wants a cent over 10.5m I would move him. Or let him get an OS.

I think the point was that you're significantly over-paying Marner and if that's where the number falls it actually makes more sense to keep Nylander and trade Marner.

I don't think Marner should get over $10m. But I also don't think Dubas has the balls to trade him and he is in a bad spot after giving Nylander and Matthews their money. This is what happens if he does give him what he is asking.

I mean.. as you can see I love both Mitch and Nylander, but overpaying someone and trading fair contract away is not good idea.

He has balls for much more than trading him. Both Matthews and Nylander received their value. Marner should receive his value as well. It starts with 9.

I had nylander at 6.75m x 6 years and Mathews at 12-12.5m x 8 years. But I’m not the one going toe to toe with player camps. I would say dubas has done a fair job so far. If you include drafting and other one way contracts I would say he is doing a good job. Include signing Tavares at a 2m discount with a strong pitch... he is doing a great job.

I think 7-8 years at $9.5m is fair for Marner and I am a big fan of Nylander as well. Want to see him play a full year with Matthews this year. It doesn't seem like anyone has a clue of the term or $$$ Marner is going to get. Wish he would take a 1 year deal until Marleau retires and then sign the long term deal, but unlikely.

Agree with you that was possible trade with Nylander signed to reasonable contract last summer. Doubt if any team wants Zaitsev and his long term contract. So the reaiity is as you described the Leafs are about 6 to 7 m over the cap. Looks like trading Nylander for prospects or picks. Forget about trading for immediate equal "on ice" value.

That would give him a arbitration rights. Not a good idea imo. My guess is around 9.316x6, 9.5x7. Or 9.875x8. Hopefully. He does not deserve more than 10.

Going to have to trump you... with your own ammo. Leafs will have to move a big cap hit. Why move a player on a fair deal to overpay marner. Trade marner or let him take an OS. Leafs will save more money and get a better return.

Its a good problem to have being a long time Leaf fan. They are waiting on Marner before they do other moves. There will be a lot of posts on here when he finally signs and everyone knows what he is making

So much fear, so little sense.

I think I'm worth Matthews money too but no one seems to want to pay it to me.

Well, I never said the Leafs should overpay Marner. But even on fair contracts, I still say the Leafs are 6 to 7m over the cap. Let's see 60 point Nylander gets 7m. Is that fair ? (I think it's bad for the Leaf, but it's a subjective opinion). So what should 90 point Marner get....maybe 10m isn't far off. But I do agree with you, Marner would get a far greater return in a trade. Why, Marner is a better player and other teams might think his trade value and salary should be 10.5m or so.

It's subjective,,,but his value on the ice might be worth Matthews "ice value". But Matthews isn't worth 11.632 m, so the Leafs are not under any obligation to pay Marner 11.632m. Gee MVP Kuchervos is starting his 3rd contract at 9.5m. Point, Aho, Rantanan, maybe Laine might close to same value as Matthews and Marner but highly doubt those guys get 11m

Yup, the return would be better and so would the relief. Then marner can have a nylander year and nylander can walk in next season fresh and ready to go. To me a 6.9m nylander and the return for marner is far greater than an 11m marner and a 2nd round pick for nylander

I did a thread last year about how Marner is more valuable on the ice than Matthews. And he is. However, top tier centres are near impossible to find and while I don't like Matthews cap hit either, I don't blame Dubas anymore for signing him.

Marner is a different story. The question isn't whether he is worth Matthews money, the question is how many points would Nylander put up in Marner's place alongside Tavares? 75? 85? 95?

9.5 is the going rate for the top end right wingers that have no hardware. And they're all better than Marner.
