Marleau Cap Relief Trade

Created by: Maple
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 26, 2019
Published: May 30, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Thought of this earlier, lemme know if this is a reasonable scenario. On second thought, probably underpaid Kapanen. And replace Engvall with Mikheyev.
Chicago might not be the right team to trade with if they plan on signing a pricey UFA + extending one of their own RFAs early such as DeBrincat/Strome. AZ and NYR won’t use up most of their cap space this summer and they’d probably eat some salary in return for some draft picks so they could be better trade partners.

Highly doubt Marleau waives his NMC unless it’s to a contender that is located relatively close to his home. His number one option would be to come back somehow stronger next year with TOR.

Connor Brown is shipped to AZ or any other team that wants a young bottom 6 defensive forward. Babcock doesn’t use Brown the same way he did two years ago and $2.1 m on the 4th line isn’t worth it. He’s now primarly used as a defensive forward as his zone starts have gone from 52oZS%/48dZS% to 44oZS%/56dZS% while being a main part of Toronto’s PK. His scoring will come back if he goes to a team that plays him more freely.

    Two issues.
    1. Chicago doesn’t want Marleau.
    2. Marleau doesn’t want to go to Chicago. They stink

That’s why I did two trades between both teams. Marleau agrees to waive his clause as long as Dubas promises to bring him back, Chicago then takes half of his cap hit and trades him back to Toronto. For taking on half of Marleau’s cap hit, Chicago moves up 3 rounds in 2019 and gains a 2020 2nd.

Ah I see. I’m not sure that’s allowed. I know you can’t re-acquire a player that you’ve retained salary on for a year.

If you plan on Orpik(ing) Marleau it will be a 2nd and a prospect and it will be 1 to 2 mil to sign him back.

I don’t. Doubt Chicago wants to absorb the entirety of Marleau’s $6.25 m cap hit.

I rememeber looking into this before and the way it is worded it is only the team trading with retained salary that can’t reaquire within a calendar year. I would certainly assume that this would fall under cap circumvention though.
