Leafs get a 7th round pick for a former 5th round pick that they obviously weren't going to sign.

I guess in hindsight the Wild win, but the Leafs got assets for someone they weren't going to sign,

It all depends on if the Leafs can get someone better than Gordeev in the 7th round.

Idk much about him but the Wild obviously value him at least a bit. Leafs weren't going to sign him so they win. MIN probably does, too. Fair deal?

By then MIN wouldn't have his rights.

That's not possible. If Gordeev wasn't signed by June 1st, he would re-enter the draft and Minnesota would have to draft him to get his rights again. Anyways, he just signed his contract.

realistically, was Toronto considering him as "the next best guy" ... probably not. they have Rosen and Liljegren.

I think it's more the opposite. Toronto didn't want to sign Gordeev so they traded him. They got back an asset for something they were going to let go.

I'm surprised that the Leafs didn't think he think had NHL potential. The Leafs do have lots of young Dman. Just thought there was way to have play in at least some of the time in the AHL next year.
Looks like the smurfs will continue in the AHL and maybe the NHL for the Leafs.

My point exactlly...how hard would it be giving him 3 x 925K to play in AHL and discover if hes made of for something bigger...no pun intended

Same goes for McGregor, who they also will not re-sign, ok, i understand 23y old Dakota missed his train....

A team that focus's mainly on their speed and quick transitions. A team that plays like that doesn't need any defensive defensemen.

I understand both McGregor and Dakota. IMO both don't seem to NHLers. Gordeev I thought had potential. The other issue which is the 50 man rule roster, if for some reason the Leafs didn't want Gordeev on that roster lack of space apparently, and only had space on a ECHL contract, now I see why Gordeev would refuse to sign that deal. Leafs must think Duzsak, Hollawell, Lindgren and Rasenum have more NHL Dman potential and are on the 50 man roster. Good luck to Gordeev, an Etobicoke (Toronto) raised boy like myself.

I like Minnesota here since this player probably has higher shot to crack NHL compared to pick given for rights to sign him did wink.
