Seabrook Trade

Created by: NicholasM2699

Initial Creation Date: May 31, 2019

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Before everyones heads explode. Seabrook needs to waive, I understand. But he goes to EDM does for McDavid what he did for Toews in being that calming leadership presence. The Hawks moving Seabrook's contract is massive and with the log jam on the backend, from a hockey standpoint it makes sense. I'm not sure about the numbers on the Oilers side from a cap standpoint, but I thought it may be a possible fit.

If Edmonton can move about 7-8 mill in cap they do this without question.

As a Hawks fan. Terrible trade. Seabrook is still a vital part of this team. He's their only physical Dman and still plays 19+ min a game. Roll that ATOI back a little and allow his leadership help the D prospect pipeline. Make a trade similar to this in 3-4 years...and It still won't cost this much!

The only way this happens is if Lucic is part of the deal

No way is Chicago giving up the #3 pick if they have to take Lucic back. Maybe Lucic and a 2nd for Seabrook alone.

See this is what hurts franchises. Over valuing an asset that no longer makes the impact he once did. Leadership does not cost you 6+ million. I love Seabrook for his leadership and all he has done for the franchise, but to say that you are willing to pay 6+ million for a guy that at this point is a 5 or 6 defensman is so dumbbbb

BUT giving away the #3OA...Yup! You're right. Let's give away a Draisatl...Miro Hesk...Jesperi K...just to overpay another UFA......SO DUMB!

When did I say anything about overpaying a UFA? You have to sign the Cat and Strome (hoping last year was not a fluke) and then need to add pieces. THat 6+ million does that and gives you that capability.

Did you just sign Eberle to $6.5M??? Yeah...we 100% don't need him. BUT we could use another #1D OR #1C....Byram...Turcotte/Cozens/Dach...

Listen, I am NOT suggesting that we dont need the 3rd overall, what I am saying is that losing the entirety of Seabrook's contract allows you to sign Strome and the Cat and also add another piece to the puzzle. I think Eberle is a nice player at 6.5 that can play anywhere in the Top 6.

Eberle is not a guy CHI needs. I'd rather take Hayes (in the worse case) for this money, especially if I'm drafting Byram. Does Seabs has bad contract, yes he does. what does he worth? Probably $3.5M max. So yes, you are overpaying about $3m a year, does it worth loosing Byram? NO. Byram is your top D man, so with ELC+$3M difference on Seabs contract he will cost you $3.9M. Not bad for first pair D. Now, what is Seabrook problem, its basically conditioning. Should he loose few lbs, train a bit better, he might improve his skating a bit and it will be even better. He still has great shot, top notch passing and good physicality. I woldn't worry about Seabs in the next 2 years.

That's fair. AND we're 100% allowed to have different opinions. I do think keeping the guy with the 2nd most games played in an Indian Head sweater ever...has value. To me...A lot of value in the short term. Especially with the number of D prospects coming up. Drafting Byram and putting him next to Seabs. Yeah that can help BOTH of them. Even swap Byram with Beaudin...that's still learning WINNING culture. 3 cups and how to win is important. There's a reason BOS is back in the finals...AND TOR which are UBER talented haven't been there in forever. Just my opinion. Also, how do you clear a net without Seabs? Part of their defensive troubles is they're so darn under-sized and weak on the back end. Clearly, Seabs is slow, but 3-4 years is the time to trade him. AZ is still going to be AZ in 4 years.

None of this matters....Seabs isn't waiving. He's been pretty clear he wants to retire a Hawk and has said he hopes to work with the Hawks office when he is done. Pondering this kind of stuff is frankly silly to spend time on. Is Seabs worth his contract...no, but he's worth every bit of $3.5M so dumping him for a crap return is wasteful. The cap continues to increase YOY so his cap hit as it looks today continues to decrease as a percentage of total cap as time goes on. This won't sting as bad in 4 years when the cap is well over $90m.

They clearly can add a big free agent (Skinner, Panarin) or even two decent sized contracts (Ferland, Dzingel) plus sign Cat, Strome and Kahun....Seab's contract doesn't prohibit that. Run the math, many of us have demonstrated how this is possible but would necessitate the need to move Anisimov.
