I'd say it's pretty realistic. There's nothing that jumps out and makes me scratch my head. As a personal preference though, I hope the Rangers don't take on any salary dumps or anything like that. We may have money now but in a few years we'll need to re-sign pretty much every young guy on our team and having cap strain then is really going to suck. Plus this also takes us out of the Panarin/UFA race but I guess it's your team. Still pretty good though.

Kadri would be offer the books by the time Kakko and Kravtsov come up for contract renewals. Check out the long term outlook and you will see we would have loads of cap room.

Taking the Marleau contract and buying it out is a one year cap hit. Not like it puts a long term impact on the cap.

How is that a bad return for Kreider? Minnesota would not do Zucker for Kreider 1-1 so throw in Pionk who is expendable and a draft pick. Zucker is younger and cost controlled for 4 years and Kreider's next contract will exceed Zucker's by probably $1M+. Both are 20 goal scorers so it's not like the Rangers would lose any scoring ability.

Not a chance from Columbus. That smith contract is horrid. Add some actual higher picks like a 2nd and a 3rd then maybe but Columbus has no need for D at this point. I could see them taking a flyer on a forward with a bad contract but not a d man. Sorry.

I have to disagree with you. $3.5 for 2 years is not terrible and you do need a defenseman (Jones, Savard, Werenski and Nutivaara are your only definites). Murray and Smith are comparable and would probably round out the top 6 barring any other signings. And Columbus does need draft picks after all the deals Jarmo has made.

Lol. Smith and Murray are comparable? What? Murray was a top 4 d last year when he was healthy, plus he’s much younger. Smith would be behind Werenski(RFA), Nuttivaara, Murray(RFA), Kukan, Harrington(RFA), Gavrikov and maybe even Carlsson next year. And that’s just the left side. On the right side we have Jones, Savard, Clendening(RFA), and Peeke that he’d be behind. So no Columbus doesn’t need defenseman next year. Good try but go learn about other teams before making trades with them.

I probably know more about Columbus than you do. Murray was a top 6 defenseman when healthy and that was years ago. Kukan, Clendening and Harrington all are 7th or ahl depth defenseman. Gavrikov should probably be top 6 and Carlsson probably starts the year in cleveland. With all that said there is a good chance that all not all of Murray, Clendening and Harrington are back.

I thought about a 3rd but figured multiple picks might be better. I'll admit I picked Columbus because of the amount of cap space they had assuming Panarin, Duchene and Bob were all gone.

because Rangers can get assets for Kreider at the deadline, as opposed to downgrading and INCLUDING the additional picks/players.

You trade him this offseason to maximize the return for a full year of him.

Dont mean to jump in here but I would rather resign Kreider but wanted to point out that his agent hinted that he would not report to camp without a new deal so trading him at the deadline might not be possible.

So you haven’t watch them recently then. Murray played with Jones for a good portion of the year till he got hurt. Harrington was a solid top 6 last year on a good contract, Gavrikov will likely be our second best LHD in a few years so give him the ice time, plus he played pretty well in limited action vs Boston, Clendining as a RHD might be back and Carlsson is still fairly young, Smith is just old and slow, he was a -7 in the nhl last year as a 7th dman and was a -11 in 11 games the year before in the AHL. Why would any team want to trade for a D man who can’t keep the puck out of his net?

Murray +20 with 29 points in 56 GP
Harrington +6
Kukan +6
Gavrikov(KHL) +48
Nuttivaara +3

All players listed are younger then Smith, actually smith would be the oldest player on Columbus blue line. So why is it a good idea to get him again?

I think Pionk and a pick is too much, but you could keep them both in the deal and add a 2021 conditional pick for if Kreider signs. For instance Rangers get a 4th, but it turns into second if he sticks around.

Sorry for the late reply, I was away for the weekend. How did I minimize the return? Minnesota won't do Zucker for Kreider 1-1 so I had to throw something else in there. I don't think the Rangers want to trade him for draft picks but rather an already established NHL player (aka hockey trade).
