From the looks of it, it isn't proper compensation. Its sheer stupidity. (From the team adding them)

If u shine them up enough for a rebuilding team with cap space, why not, I wouldn’t let dubas off the hook, without fair compensation, but zaitzev could be a revival project in the right circumstances and marleau not going to hurt a young team on teaching them how to be pros

What is being reported? Besides LeBrun mentioning the Kings discussing Marleau, I haven't seen anything credible on either guy.

Absolutely but that is in vacuum. Both those assets could be had in free agency if you really need it. The rub here is that any GM taking these guys on is not the problem, its actively going after them that is. By actively going after them you give them value. Value that they shouldn't have based on where we are in time now. Both those guys leaving are essential to Leafs resigning every single one of their RFA's. Any GM taking these guys on is should only do so for the added assets that may come with them. Otherwise, how can you justify losing an asset in exchange for players who aren't worth their contracts?

I think it is important to remind myself however that GM's sometimes help each other purely out for goodwill, future negotiations etc. rather than straight business transactions. There is a reason we don't see offer sheets anymore. Its much better to pay a negotiated value for a player than to offer sheet another GM's player. With only 30 other GM's in the league, falling out of favor with anyone of them may mean the difference of not being able to add that one piece you really need, right when you need it.

So if Blake would be gaining some major Browny points in Dubas's eyes by doing some illogical Marleau trade, then I guess but since we'll never know I'll just assume he's stewpit. squinting with tongue out

Im not following it as closely as others are so im assuming some of the ideas thrown about on here have some small bit of merit to it.

Good call, and I swear there’s a lot of that, because how many recycled gms get jobs, with a mediocre track record, same with coaches, and some of these 8 year deals to players, I bet some gms are feeling, I won’t be there when the contract gets bad anyway. Who in there right mind gives skinner 8x 8.75, let’s say last year was 8 million dollar season at 40 goals, how many of the next 8 seasons are going to be greater than that over/under is 3.5.

Yeah its the only way to explain some of these moves. Other than Doug Wilson basically screwing over Dorion in the Hoffman deal, we rarely see any "ill intent" type moves from GM's. Always trying to keep them happy and only a phone call away. It is smart but with how many trades actually end up happening, they're probably better off taking advantage like Wilson did and just burn a couple bridges. I mean in the end, Dorion still dealt Karlsson to SJ in the end so their couldn't have been that much ill will after the Hoffman deal.
