He's no longer Mac Truck, more like Mac Family Sedan. Trust an old McD fan here, he hasn't played with aggression in 3+ years and has big term. Zero chance he waives for WPG.

Mcdonagh is still an elite shutdown Dman and his deal will only be brutal for about the last 2 years and will be a bargain for around the 1st 3 seasons of it, and not like you have much leverage anyway, mcdonagh probably wouldnt even waive

He didnt look very elite in the playoffs when Tampa was coming apart at the seams, no thanks, the Lightning can keep him and you're right he's probably not waiving anyway.

"Hey, let's take a 4 games period to judge a player's abilities". Geez.

McDonagh has been the best Dman for Tampa this season and it's not even close. Defensively he was one of the best players in the whole NHL and he also set a career high in points. Pretty bad, eh?

Lightning will keep him and will be happy about it. 6.75M for what he brings on the ice every night is a very good price and will be an absolute bargain in a couple years, as AAVs and cap constantly go up. The last couple of years of his contract will be rough, but for the first 4 Tampa will be glad to have him on the team.

He may not be Mac Truck anymore, but he has just played the best season of his career this year. Both defensively and offensively.

Fair and valid points I just wouldn't trade Trouba for him, he fits Tampa’s window better then the Jets window. I'm of the opinion that the Jets need to retool this season for long term success and their real window to win is gonna be in 2-3 seasons from now when their young players are more mature and physically developed, I just don't see McDonagh fitting in that window, Cernak on the other hand.....

Oh, now we are talking! smile I agree on your opinion and future projection. Cernak would be a no-start for Tampa, as the Lightning desperately need some good, cost controlled players from here going forward. Especially with Cernak showing flashes of brilliance and the grit + physicality that the Bolts were desperately missing on the Dcore.

For what it's worth, about one week ago Winnipeg's beatwriter for TheAthletic Murat Ares published an articled titled "Seven potential trade destinations for Jacob Trouba and what the Jets might get in return". Tampa was obviously one of them (as Tampa had inquired on Trouba in the past). This is what he said in term of potential return for him:
(Premise, as the Bolts cap situation is tight, a trade would work out having some cap going back to Winnipeg - not in term of retained cap but in term of players going from Tampa to Winnipeg)
Ates: Tyler Johnson’s offensive stats while playing alongside Brayden Point and Nikita Kucherov are clear of Bryan Little. That said, I can’t imagine he waives his no-trade clause, leaving Winnipeg to make a difficult case for second-line centre J.T. Miller or the sublimely talented, pint-size centre/winger Yanni Gourde. Both of these latter players are extremely compelling but would likely take a signed Trouba.

Yeah if there's a Trouba trade to Tampa and Cernak is off the table the only guy from Tampa as the centerpiece of the deal I'd want would be Miller, Gourde doesn't interest me one bit and Johnson isn't likely waiving for Winnipeg and even if he did I'd still prefer Miller, not sure if that's a straight one for one deal though.

Okay... Then another team will take him at that price. He isn't Steve Mason... You don't get a sweetener on this one.

There are teams with cap space and a need for a forward who can play in all situations, up and down the lineup... And can afford the cap hit. He's the type of player you wouldn't get for a 4th round pick at a lower cap hit... Like a player like Riley Nash would be a comparable type player, but would cost more in future capital to acquire, given a lower cap burden. A rebuilding team looking to fill out a roster, and reach the cap floor, but not looking to move higher draft picks or prospects to do it would certainly eat the cap hit for a player like that.
