Because they get Kapanen, the type of player that they need in exchange for an asset that they have in abundance

Leafs take that trade IF you can sign Faulk to a good extension.

Why would Leafs ever make that trade? Trading Faulk for Zaitsev leaves take on 375,000 more in cap and lose Kapanen too. Rather just keep Zaitsev...and Kapanen.

...but also take on $21 million worth of an asset that they have in abundance...

I think the Leafs would be fine with it post-July 1st so they could negotiate an extension.

I'd be willing to throw in Joseph Woll to see if we could pick up Fleury from that other deal as well...lots of flexibility there, especially if you lose Muzzin next year.

But Faulk for Zaitsev is just...... trading water for dirt when you are stranded on a desert island. That made no sense but you get what I'm saying. Plus, it's a d-man for d-man. They ain't losing a d-man in this deal.

Teams don't trade "hoping for an extension." Leafs probably couldn't afford a good Faulk in 2020/21 and beyond and not sure what Faulk's motivation is to resign immediately.
Woll for Fleury sends goods from a Leaf view.
I'd rather wait to see if Zaitsev truly doesn't report to the Leafs as per his press statement. Would like that 4.5m cap space.

Just a hint, don't put quotation marks around something that isn't a quotation. I didn't say, "hoping for an extension", it's very clear I said, do it post-July 1st so you can have the extension signed. Why wouldn't they be able to sign him next year? They have lots more cap space in 2020.

Comrie/3rd was for Fleury, what I said was I'd be happy for the Leafs to throw Woll in Comrie's place and do that deal as well. Did you not understand that? Do you think Comrie and Woll have very different value?

Zaitsev not reporting would be in September. There'd be little chance to upgrade the blueline at that point, so not sure they would wait that long.
