Why would Trouba sign a contract with only the team that can afford the Jets demand for top assets when he can negotiate with the whole league 13 months later? Stone's situation was different in that free agency was only a few months later after the trade plus the following year's cap was already known--oh and his team wasn't close to making the playoffs. Trouba isn't in the same situation. That would make the Trouba trade a very expensive rental.

If Stone wouldn’t wait 3 months why would Trouba wait 13? Injuries suck, maybe it would be good to have the security

Big difference between signing 3 months early when the cap is already set instead of playing a wasted rest of the season in Ottawa (the worst team in the league) vs 13 months on a Cup contending Jets team when the 20-'21 cap is not known. He can take out an insurance policy to guard against injuries that would affect his next contract. Beyond that he's a multi-millionaire--he has security.
